[01] KASOULIDES - CHRISTOFIAS - SECOND ROUND OF ELECTIONSFormer Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and House President and AKEL Secretary General Demetris Christofias go through to the second round of presidential elections.Christofias and Kasoulides have secured most of the vote while incumbent President Tassos Papadopoulos is trailing in third place. Since none of the two leading candidates can secure more than 50% of the vote, Kasoulides and Christofias will compete in the run-off election next Sunday, in which the candidate with the largest number of votes will be declared President of the Republic. Turnout in today`s elections reached 89.42% with Cyprus Interior Minister expressing satisfaction with ``the impeccable elections.`` Polling opened at 07:00 local time (0500 GMT) and closed at 17:00. A total of 1,159 polling stations operated in today`s elections. [02] PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - FINAL RESULTSThe final results of the presidential elections are:Registered voters: 515.994 Votes cast: 462,847 89.62% Abstention: 53,594 10.38% Valid: 450,639 97.36% Void: 7,798 1.68% Blank: 4,410 0.95% Candidates ------------ Ioannis Kasoulides - 150,996 33.51% Demetris Christofias - 150,016 33.29% Tassos Papadopoulos - 143,249 31.79% Andreas Efstratiou - 713 0.16% Costas Themistocleous - 753 0.17% Costas Kyriacou (Utopos) - 1,092 0.24% Marios Matsakis - 3,460 0.77% Anastasis Michael - 243 0.05% Christodoulos Neophytou - 117 0.03% A candidate needs to secure 50% plus one vote to be elected President. If no candidate secures this majority in the first round, the two candidates to secure most of the votes pass into the run off election. Thus, Ioannis Kasoulides and Demetris Christofias go through to the second round of the elections, to be held on February 24. [03] PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - INTERIOR MINISTERCyprus Minister of the Interior Christos Patsalides expressed satisfaction with the ``impeccable way in which the presidential elections were conducted today.``In statements after the closing of the poll, Patsalides said the turnout in today`s elections reached 89.42 per cent, adding that no problems had occurred during voting. ``Our people proved once more its political maturity, its civilised behaviour and its unwavering faith in the democratic procedures of our state,`` Patsalides added.
