  • [01] CYPRIOT VOTERS - ELECTIONS

Cypriots have begun arriving in Cyprus from abroad to vote in Sundays presidential elections. Most of the passengers arrive on Cyprus Airways flights from Athens, Salonica and London. On Thursday CY operated 38 flights from various destinations to carry voters.

Cyprus Airways spokesman Kyriakos Kyriakou has told CNA that the airline has offered 14,700 seats to the three main contenders of the presidential race, which have been almost equally distributed among them.

The main candidates are incumbent President Tassos Papadopoulos, House President Demetris Christofias and former foreign minister and Euro MP Ioannis Kasoulides.

[02] US OFFICIAL - CYPRUS VISIT

Nicholas Burns, outgoing US Undersecretary of State, has indicated that a US high ranking official might visit Cyprus in the near future.

Burns had said in recent statements that he might be visiting Cyprus, but he retires from the US government next month. Replying to a questions by CNA after a working lunch with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis, who is visiting Washington, Burns said that he will not be able to visit Cyprus after Sundays presidential elections.

``Maybe I will not manage to visit but someone else might,`` he added.
