Cyprus has reported to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon new violations of the international air traffic regulations and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkish Air Force military aircraft recorded from 5 December 2007 until 30 January 2008.

In a letter to Ban, which circulated on Wednesday as a document of the General Assembly, Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis strongly protested the violations and called for their immediate cessation.

I would like to stress that Turkey by its irresponsible actions not only gravely violates international law and international rules, but also puts at risk the safety of international civil aviation in the region, the Cypriot diplomat noted.

He also underlined that Turkey, a country that has aspirations to take a non-permanent seat in the Security Council next year, systematically attempts to undermine the sovereignty and unity of the Republic of Cyprus by promoting an illegal secessionist entity, arrogating to itself, inter alia, the right to interfere in part of the sovereign airspace of Cyprus. This gravely jeopardizes the atmosphere of trust and confidence that should prevail between the two sides in order to resume negotiations and provides once again evidence of Turkeys precise political aim, which is to consolidate the division of the island and maintain its presence in Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

[02] GREEK FM - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis said 2008 provides a window of opportunity for the Cyprus problem and that, ``should Turkey be ready to comply with the European acquis, the EU must in turn honour its commitments and grant full member status.``

Speaking on ``The Transformation of Southeastern Europe: A Challenge for Smart Power`` at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, in Washington, Bakoyiannis noted that ``our neighbour`s EU membership will for Greece be a moment of great satisfaction, it will mean that years of negotiations and of laborious efforts have borne fruit.``

Replying to questions from the audience, Bakoyiannis said Turkey could not become a member of the EU if the Cyprus problem remained unsolved and referred to the presence of Turkish troops on the island.

    [03] POLICE - PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

Around 2,500 police officers will be on duty on Sunday to ensure law and order as Cypriots go to the polls to elect their President.

Police Chief Iakovos Papacostas said policemen have been assigned to polling stations, election centres, to the Nicosia Conference Centre where votes will be counted and to Eleftheria stadium where the declaration of the new President will take place on February 24th, once the second round of the election takes place and a clear winner will emerge.

Police will guard sensitive locations which could be targeted and will make sure that no election banners are up where they should not be. Previous elections have run smoothly in a democratic manner.

[04] PLANNING BUREAU - EU FUNDS - CYPRUS

The Cyprus Planning Bureau assured that no single euro will be lost from the European Union Structural and Cohesion funds earmarked for Cyprus.

In a press release, the Bureau explains the reasons why Cyprus is presented to have the lowest absorption capacity 62 per cent among the ten nations that joined the EU in 2004, with regard to the payments of the period 2004-2006.

EU Commission earmarked for Cyprus a total of 109 million euro, 55 millions from the Structural Funds and 54 millions from the Cohesion Fund
