  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - KOSOVO

Cyprus position on a possible unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo is based on principles, President Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed, adding that Nicosia and Moscow share common positions on the Kosovo issue.

Invited to comment on statements by first Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Sergei Ivanov on Kosovo, Papadopoulos said that Ivanov had pointed out that a UDI by Kosovo is an unorthodox and bad idea and that this would set a precedent which could affect other issues. He did not say it would by necessity affect Cyprus. Cyprus and Russia have maintained a position of principle on Kosovo, President Papadopoulos said, answering press questions. The Cypriot President added that Cyprus EU partners understand Nicosias stance on Kosovo.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, he expressed the conviction that the government, through its declarations and actions, has convinced the international community that it has all the necessary political will, the willingness and the readiness to begin a serious dialogue with the Turkish Cypriot side in the framework of the Gambari process which was agreed under UN auspices and was signed by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of then UN Undersecretary for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    [02] ELECTIONS - RESULTS

Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savides has said that the initial results in Sundays presidential elections are expected around 2030 local time (1830 GMT). Speaking in Larnaca, during a meeting with local election officials, he said in the second round of the elections the result is expected slightly earlier, at 2000 local time.

The main three candidates in the presidential race are incumbent President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, seeking re-election, House President and General Secretary of AKEL Demetris Christofias and former foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

Presiding election officials must be very careful in the exercise of their duties to ensure full compliance with and application of the law in order to avoid any unpleasant circumstance, Savides said after the meeting.

    [03] CSE - REGIONAL COOPERATION

Cooperation between the Cyprus and the Maltese Stock Exchange was the main purpose of a meeting in Nicosia between delegations from both financial institutions.

The Chairman of the CSE George Koufaris has said the two stock exchanges are much the same size, have similar problems and the meeting between officials aimed at examining ways to cooperate. This, he explained, includes the creation of specialised markets, cooperation in shipping companies market and in the purchase of mutual funds.

It is imperative that stock exchanges cooperate between themselves because of the new environment, following the application of new European directives (Mifid),`` he said. Responding to questions, Koufaris said that a memorandum of understanding the CSE is set to sign with the Cairo and Alexandria stock exchange is part of efforts by the CSE to develop ties with other exchanges in the region.

    [04] MALTA - CYPRUS - PROTOCOL

Cyprus and Malta have signed a protocol for increased cooperation with a view to improve bilateral collaboration as well as concerted action at international fora. The protocol was signed by Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis and her Maltese counterpart Michael Frendo in Valetta, on the sidelines of the European Union Arab League meeting.

It provides for consultations and increased cooperation at international and regional organizations on issues relating to political cooperation, bilateral relations, the question of Cyprus and other European and international concerns.

The protocol also provides for periodical meetings between the two ministers and senior ministry officials.
