The fact that the 5th Informal Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of ten European Union Mediterranean countries is organised in Cyprus proves the role which Cyprus can play in the EU, President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos said.

Speaking to the press upon his arrival at the venue where the meeting is taking place, Papadopoulos said that this is ``an important Informal Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Mediterranean States. We feel deeply satisfied that Cyprus was chosen to host it, a fact which proves the role and the potentials of Cyprus within the EU,`` Papadopoulos noted.

Addressing the Foreign Ministers during a welcoming reception at the venue where the Meeting is taking place, President Papadopoulos said that ``the meeting here is very important,`` adding that the meeting will provide them the opportunity to exchange ideas ``on serious matters which sooner or later will be discussed by the European Union``.

President Papadopoulos welcomed the EU Foreign Ministers of Mediterranean countries who participate in the 5th Informal Meeting in Paphos, saying that their presence in Cyprus coincides with Cyprus` accession to the eurozone.

``Your presence coincides with a big event for Cyprus. We joint the euro and I take this opportunity to thank Slovenians, Irish and Greeks for giving us their own experiences out of which we have been helped very much in avoiding pitfalls with difficulties so the conversion into euro has gone until now very smoothly and very effectively``, he noted.

He also wished them productive meetings during their deliberations, which end tomorrow.

Concluding, the President referred to Paphos, the Cypriot coastal town where the Meeting takes place, and where ``Saint Paul preached Christianity`` and which is a ``place of culture, archaeology and history``.
