  • [01] GREECE CYPRUS INTERSTATE AGREEMENT

The Defence Ministers of Greece and Cyprus signed an interstate agreement which addresses the issue of the ownership of the missile systems S300, TOR M1 and SUZANA.

Cyprus Defence Minister Christodoulos Pashiardes told the press after signing the agreement, which followed talks between the two Ministers and their aides, that according to this agreement the Cypriot side transfers the ownership of the S 300 missiles to Greece in return for the ownership of two other missile systems.

The agreement settles permanently an issue pending for many years, Pashiardes said.

Greek Minister of National Defence Evangelos Meimarakis said this was an important agreement in that it resolves a long standing issue which had troubled Athens and Nicosia for many years.

Meimarakis also noted that the joint defence pact, agreed in the early 1990s between Cyprus and Greece, is still in place.

The agreement reached today, with all interested parties, settles a pending issue and integrates the weaponry systems into our defences, he said, adding that these systems are used to safeguard stability and peace in the broader region.

The Cypriot Defence Minister said that he had the chance to discuss with Meimarakis about various other issues regarding the continuation and promotion of the cooperation between the two Ministries. He also underlined the close, excellent and effective cooperation between the two Ministries.

    [02] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS TURKEY

President Tassos Papadopoulos has said that the policy of the Turkish side does not aim at reunifying Cyprus, but at upgrading the regime in the occupied areas into that of a separate legal entity, short of diplomatic recognition, a separate state within a state.

Receiving the credentials of Cubas new Ambassador, based in Nicosia, Fidel Emilio Vascos Gonzalez, President Papadopoulos said that this is a core issue in the process for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem and this is an outcome to which we will never concur.

    [03] GREEK DEFENCE MINISTER MEETINGS

Greek Minister of National Defence Evangelos Meimarakis has expressed his countrys active and tangible support to Cyprus.

Speaking to the press after a meeting here with House President Demetris Christofias, Meimarakis said he was pleased to be back in Cyprus, following his most recent visit a few months ago. Earlier today he was received by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Visits of Greek officials to Cyprus send the message that we are supporting, actively and in a tangible way, the solutions you are proposing. Such visits are an indication of our close relations, our cooperation and fraternal ties, he said.

    [04] CYPRIOT FM PALESTINIANS PLEDGE

Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis said that the solution of the Palestinian problem is among the countrys top priorities.

Marcoullis was speaking to the press after her arrival in Cyprus from Paris where she participated in International Donors Conference for the Palestinian State, in which Cyprus pledged two million dollars for the period of 2008-2010.
