  • [01] PARTIES - BUFFER ZONE

Leaders or representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties toured the UN-controlled buffer zone on Thursday, dividing the southern government controlled areas of the Republic from the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

The tour was organised by the Slovak Embassy in cooperation with the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus.

Ambassador of the Slovak Republic Anna Turenicova told the party representatives this was a special day for politicians.

She recalled that at their previous meeting on November 14 party representatives discussed the issue of opening Ledra Street, a main commercial street in the capital, to help boost economic and social development.

    [02] MAVROYIANNIS - CYPRUS - TURKEY

Cyprus, in its capacity as a European Union member, seems to have gained some leverage for the first time against Turkey, which occupies the countrys northern part, Cyprus` Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis has said.

Speaking on ``Addressing the Cyprus Question Today: New Content for the Choice of Multilateralism``, at an event in New York, organised by the Hellenic American Bankers` Association on Tuesday, Mavroyiannis said ``effective multilateralism is an important component of the common security strategy of the EU and the core thought of the European approach to international relations and for the EU, multilateralism constitutes a matter of principle, a nonnegotiable starting point.``

Mavroyiannis noted that the promotion of these common values and the search for multilateral solutions to common problems is one of the EU aims and that Cyprus, as a member state, can and must contribute towards promoting these aims, which are of great significance for the EU and of vital importance for Cyprus.

    [03] CCCI - RESTRICTIONS

Restrictions, imposed by the illegal regime in occupied Cyprus on Turkish Cypriots, undermine relations between the islands two communities, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has said.

CCCI President Manthos Mavromatis noted that from August 2004 to November 2007, the value of sales from Turkish Cypriot businessmen to Greek Cypriot businessmen amounted to nine million euros.

Speaking at a press conference, he criticised the Turkish occupation regime for the restrictions it has imposed on the purchase of goods by Turkish Cypriots in the southern government controlled part of Cyprus.

    [04] CYPRIOT MPS - FRANCE

The lively interest of France in the Cyprus problem and the country`s political will to contribute towards a settlement, especially within the framework of the French EU presidency in the second half of 2008, was reaffirmed at the France-Cyprus Friendship Group at the National Assembly of France, in the context of an official visit of a Cypriot parliamentary delegation to Paris, at the invitation of the French Senate.

The Cypriot delegation, comprising Demetris Syllouris, heading the group, Takis Hadjidemetriou, George Tasou, Athena Kyriakidou and George Varnava, wrapped up its visit to Paris on Wednesday.
