    The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pointed out the need for the continuation of efforts, in the framework of UN Security Council resolutions and a UN-brokered agreement between President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

    In a press release concerning the recent discussions of Russian special envoy for Cyprus Leonid Abramov in Nicosia and Athens, the Ministry says that ``in conditions of traditional friendship and mutual understanding, the important common approach on the current situation in Cypriot affairs, the necessity to strengthen the leading role of the UN in the search for a comprehensive, viable and just solution of the Cyprus problem, the need to continue efforts in the spirit of UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and the agreements reached on 8 July 2006 were affirmed.``

    The press release also refers to the meetings Abramov held with President Papadopoulos, House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias and Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis.

    The press release says Abramov also exchanged views with Talat, focusing on the bicommunal dialogue, contacts between the leaders of the islands two communities and further measures to promote confidence.

    In another press release, the Ministry says Abramov met with senior officials at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed relations between Russia and Greece and the principles concerning the Cyprus problem.

    [02] PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - REGISTRATION

    All citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, 18 years old or over, who reside regularly in Cyprus, have the right to vote in next February`s presidential elections, according to a Central Electoral Service press release.

    New eligible voters, even those who will be 18 before the 17th of February 2008, are called to register on time so as to obtain an electoral booklet and be able to vote. The last day for registration is the 2nd January 2008.

    The press release notes that applications will not be accepted after this date. Application forms for registration can be obtained at the Ombudsman offices, at the Citizens Service Centers, the Electoral Service, as well as the Interior Ministry website www.moi.gov.cy.

    Cyprus` President Tassos Papadopoulos will seek re-election and House President and General Secretary of left-wing AKEL Demetris Christofias, former Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, backed by the Democratic Rally party, and former Agriculture Minister Costas Themistocleous have announced their decision to run for the presidency.

    The first round of the presidential elections will be held on 17 February 2008, followed by a second round on 24 February, if no candidate secures 50% plus one vote in the first round.

    [03] CSE - ASE - COOPERATION

    Chairmen of the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) and the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) Giorgos Koufaris and Sypros Kapralos respectively expressed satisfaction over the results of the common trading platform between the CSE and ASE, a year after it was launched.

    In a press conference held in Athens both Chairmen said the common trading platforms first year of operation was crowned with success and both stock exchanges have been benefited from it. They also referred to the close cooperation and good relations, which prevail between the CSE and ASE.

    In statements to CNA Giorgos Koufaris said that the minor technical problems, which existed and hampered the operation of the common trading platform, have been tackled and resolved and added that now the platform is operating smoothly.

    He also described the investor road show, organized jointly by the CSE and the ASE in Athens yesterday, as very successful. Koufaris added that nine CSE listed companies have taken part in the road show addressed to Greek institutional investors and expressed his content for the course of the contacts. In his statements, Kapralos said, one year after the launching of the common trading platform the operation has been crowned with success and both bourses have been benefited.
