    President of the Hellenic Parliament Dimitrios Sioufas, who is in Cyprus on a two-day official visit, at the invitation of Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias, conveyed the support of all the political parties of Greece to Cyprus struggle for a viable and functional settlement of the Cyprus question. A settlement that will be based on UN resolutions and the EU principles and values.

    In statements to the press after his arrival, Sioufas stressed the need of reunification of the Republic of Cyprus adding that the only separating walls, remaining on European ground must fall.

    Christofias, who welcomed Sioufas at the airport congratulated him over his election at the presidency of the Hellenic Parliament and wished him every success at his task on behalf of the people of Cyprus and the House of Representatives.

    He noted that this is the first official visit Sioufas is paying after his election and expressed certainty that this visit will contribute to the further promotion of our common goals both for the promotion of a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem and of our common goals within the EU.

    [02] CHINA - CYPRUS - TRADE EXCHNGES

    Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus Zhao Yali has described the value of trade exchanges between Cyprus and China during the first nine months of 2007 as historic, noting that they reached 505.6 million dollars.

    Furthermore, Zhao said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1971, trade recorded an increase of about 83%.

    Speaking at a press conference on the occasion of the Euro-China Business Week, an exhibition of Chinese products and services, Zhao said imports to Cyprus from China reached 500.3 million dollars in the period from January to September 2007, recording an 80% increase, while exports from Cyprus to China reached 5.3 million dollars, recording an increase of 154% compared to the same period last year.

    Zhao expressed certainty that the exhibition would contribute to the further enhancing of cooperation between the two countries in the commercial and economic sector.

    [03] CYPRUS - UK - TOURISM

    Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO) President Panos Englezos appeared hopeful for a turnaround in tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom to Cyprus by the end of the year.

    Englezos, who is in London to attend the World Travel Market exhibition, told CNA that tourist arrivals from the UK to Cyprus recorded so far a 4% decrease compared to last years corresponsive period.

    He noted that the decrease reached 16% in springtime, while it was contained at 8% and was eventually further reduced to a current 4%.

    ``We hope for a further containment of the downward tendency, if not a total recovery by the end of the year,`` he said, adding that tourist bookings from Britain for the summer of 2008 appear improved compared to those of the current year.

    The CTO President said that tourist arrivals from Russia, Scandinavian countries and Arab states recorded an increase for 2007.
