  • [01] PRESIDENT - FMD OUTBREAK

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed deep sorrow about the situation in Cyprus, following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease at two local farms.

He also expressed satisfaction about the response of the European Union to Cyprus in its effort to deal with the matter.

I am deeply saddened and feel great sorrow about the outbreak of the foot and mouth disease, he said, after a meeting with the ministers of finance and agriculture and the veterinary services.

He said the government will not allow this situation to destroy animal husbandry in Cyprus, adding that animal breeders, whose flock has been killed, as part of measures to contain the disease, will be compensated fully.

Papadopoulos also said that all necessary measures will be taken to deal with the situation, adding that there are scenarios to tackle both the worst and the best case scenario.

    [02] FMD - GOVERNMENT

Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Fotis Fotiou appealed to stockbreeders in Cyprus to report to the Veterinary Services of the Republic any symptoms on their livestock which may lead to the suspicion of a Food and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Fotiou held a meeting with the two EU experts who are on the island to help monitor the situation with the FMD outbreak in the Dromolaxia area, near the coastal town of Larnaca.

In statements after the meeting, the Minister said that the EU technocrats reassured him that Cyprus is taking all necessary measures to combat the disease.

    [03] COMMISSION - FMD

The European Commission has described Cyprus as a high risk zone following an outbreak of the foot and mouth disease, adding that appropriate measures are in place to deal with the situation.

The Commission also said that the local Cypriot cheese, halloumi, does not come under the restrictions imposed on Cyprus because of the outbreak, and can be exported.

Speaking in Brussels Phillippe Tod, spokesman for the EU Health Commissioner Marcos Kyprianou, told a press conference in Brussels that in response to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in sheep in Dromolaxia, the Standing Committee voted today in favour of a decision reinforcing the precautionary measures in Cyprus.

    [04] GREEK FM - OCCUPATION

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis has described the occupation of part of Cyprus as a sad paradox, in that a candidate country, Turkey, occupies territory of an EU member state, Cyprus.

Addressing an audience at the London School of Economics, Bakoyiannis called on Turkey to comply fully with EU rules and regulation, if it wants to join the Union, and stressed that partition in Cyprus is not an option, as far as prospects for a political settlement are concerned.

The Cyprus issue is naturally linked to our relations with Turkey: yet it retains its strong independent character. At this moment, we are dealing with a sad paradox. A member state of the European Union is occupied by a candidate for accession, she said, and reiterated the Greek governments steadfast commitment to reaching a just and viable solution for the reunification of Cyprus.
