[01] EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT - TURKEYThe plenary session of the European Parliament has concluded its discussions regarding a resolution on relations between the EU and Turkey, with the majority of the Parliament being quite firm regarding Turkey`s obligations and possible military invasion of Iraq.Portuguese Secretary of State for European Affairs Manuel Lobo Antunes said the prospect of Turkey`s accession to the EU was undoubtedly a motive for reforms in the country. Referring to PKK attacks, Antunes said the EU should help Turkey in combating terrorism with respect to the rule of law, adding that Turkey should not proceed with disproportional military action and should cooperate with Iraq. Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said the European Commission wanted an objective position, noting that Wednesday`s discussions and the resolution sent clear messages that it was high time for an acceleration of reform efforts, which would be to the benefit of Turkey and its EU accession course, as well as freedom of expression and religion. ``The EU condemns all terrorist attacks and understands Turkey`s need to protect its citizens,`` Rehn said, adding that Turkey should seek a political solution with Iraq`s regional authorities and show a spirit of proportionality in its retaliation towards the PKK. On the Armenian issue, Rehn said the EU supports a process of reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey.
