    Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stated that the Greek Cypriot side continues to show good will in the search of a just and viable Cyprus solution the earliest possible and looks forward to pressures to be exerted on the Turkish side to change its intransigent stance.

    President Papadopoulos was addressing the unveiling ceremony today, at Orounta village, west of capital Nicosia, of the bust of Major General Christos Photis, who was killed during the Turkish invasion in 1974.

    The Cypriot President declared that we will never accept the faits accomplish created by the Turkish invasion and a solution that directly or indirectly legalise those faits accomplish.

    He stressed that any attempt to bring back solution plans that the Greek Cypriots had rejected was doomed to fail and would meet again our steady resistance and decisive refusal.

    We declare once again our persistence to carry on the struggle and efforts for finding, the earliest possible, a just and viable solution, for the prevalence of freedom and independence of our homeland, Papadopoulos pointed out.

    [02] CYPRUS SYRIA EXPLANATIONS

    Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Markoullis has addressed a letter to her Syrian counterpart Walid Al Muallem demanding explanations as regards illegal routes between the closed ports of Famagusta, under Turkish occupation since 1974, and Latakia, Syria.

    Markoullis handed over the letter at a meeting here Sunday with Syrias charge d affaires in Nicosia Nader Nader.

    The Cypriot minister stated after the meeting that she had a telephone conversation Saturday night with her Syrian counterpart demanding an answer to the question she had put forward to Walid Al Muallem at their recent meeting in New York, whether the Syrian government has decided the termination of the illegal routes between the Turkish-occupied port of Famagusta and Latakia.

    Markoullis said she described in her letter Cyprus concerns over violations and illegal acts as a result of those routes.

    [03] HUNGARY SPEAKER

    Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly Katalin Szili will pay Cyprus a visit between 9 and 13 October, accompanied by a parliamentary delegation and other officials.

    During her visit here, Szili will be received by President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos and President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias. She will also hold a series of meetings with members of the Cabinet.
