Furthermore, he reiterated US support to the initiatives of the UN General Secretary, saying that the US administration is asking him to proceed to the appointment of a UN Special Representative to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking in Washington at the US Atlantic Council on the Future of the relations between USA and Turkey, Burns underlined that the Cyprus problem must be solved.

Commending on the recent meeting between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and T/C leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Burns expressed the view that the meeting demonstrated the willingness of the two leaders for a solution.

Burns reiterated US support to the initiatives of the UN General Secretary, saying that ``US administration is asking him to proceed to the appointment of a UN Special Representative to the Cyprus problem``.

It is a fact that Cyprus is divided. It is in our interest as allies both of Greece and Turkey to find a solution to the Cyprus issue on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation Burns said.

He also reiterated his intention to visit Cyprus soon.

Responding to a question by a Turkish Journalist who connected the solution with the existence of the so called embargo against the T/C, the U.S. official pointed out that this is a matter of a technocratic nature concerning both Europeans and Cypriots.
