[01] DOCTORS OF THE WORLD - KENYA MISSION
The Doctors of the World Cyprus will continue to organise special
missions to Kenya and provide medical assistance but local doctors will
also be trained in order to offer medical care to patients on a daily
base. Molecular Geneticist Matheos Demetriades, who is coordinating the
Cypriot mission of the international organisation in Kenya, has told
CNA that the Cypriot mission in Kenya has so far examined hundreds of
patients and provided assistance in dentistry and pediatrics, as well
as laboratory work in Riruta.
Cypriot pediatrician Petros Iakovides, also in Riruta with the mission,
will be visiting Kitira with the rest of the team, where the second
biggest shanty town worldwide is located, as he explained. On Tuesday
the doctors received further pharmaceutical supplies. Demetriades said
that in Kitira there are a lot of people waiting for us there and that
the mission will provide medical care in pediatrics and conduct
laboratory work, including biochemical, hematological and immunological
analyses.
The mission will depart on Thursday for Nyeri, where a big orphanage is
located. Our aim is to create a small medical clinic there since there
are approximately 8 thousand people around the orphans home, who have
never received any medical treatment, Demetriades said. Meanwhile, the
mission has also obtained tenders for extending the medical centre and
for making additional wards in Riruta. Apart from Demetriades and
Iakovides, the mission of volunteers comprises dentists George Georgiou
and Olga Sophocleous and volunteer Katia Christodoulou.
