  • [01] CYPRUS - OIL - TENDERS - SATISFACTION

Cyprus expressed satisfaction here Thursday for the three applications it received concerning three different exploration blocks for hydrocarbon exploration in its exclusive economic zone.

An official statement said that a total of three applications for three different exploration blocks were submitted. One application to explore a single exploration block was submitted by a US company. Two applications were submitted by a consortium of three companies from Norway, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

It further said that the procedure to examine the applications will take place according to the provisions of the relevant law and regulations and is scheduled to be completed before the end of 2007.

According to the statement, the government, after conducting two-dimensional seismic survey within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus in 2006, proceeded with the demarcation of the area into 13 blocks, of which 11 were offered for the first round of granting licenses to search and exploit possible hydrocarbon reserves.

The government intention was announced on 4th May 2007 in the Official Gazette of the European Union and on 14th May in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus. The 16th of August 2007 (between 0800-1430 local time) was set as the date to submit applications by companies which would express interest.

Furthermore, the government said that the interest exhibited is satisfactory and it is expected that during the second round of licenses which is scheduled to take place in 2008, there will be additional available two-dimensional and three-dimensional seismic data of the area and as a result, the interest will be stronger.

    [02] MARKOULLI - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The Cypriot government insists on creating the preconditions which will contribute to preparing a new round of negotiations to achieve an overall Cyprus settlement, said here Thursday Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Marcoulli.

Speaking at a gathering organised by the Municipal Council of Morphou, to mark the 33rd anniversary since the town was seized by the Turkish army in 1974, Marcoulli said this can only be achieved with the implementation of the July 8 2006 Agreement and through the Gambari process, that is to operate the technical committees and working groups to create the necessary climate and lessen the gap between the positions of the two sides.

    [03] MORPHOU - RESOLUTION

The Municipal Council of the Turkish occupied town of Morphou, on the 33rd anniversary of the seizing of the town by the Turkish army, calls on the governments of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, to ``exert pressure upon Turkey to change its attitude and work towards a just solution to the Cyprus problem.``

In the resolution, which was also presented to President Tassos Papadopoulos and the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, the Morphou refugees note that ``the present situation is totally unacceptable and a disgrace to humanity.``

    [04] CYPRIOT DOCTORS - KENYA

The Cypriot mission of the international organisation Doctors of the World is touched with emotion by the response it has had in Kenya, where it is providing medical assistance in dentistry and pediatrics, as well as laboratory work.

Molecular Geneticist Matheos Demetriades, who is coordinating the mission, told CNA on Thursday that the mission, which is currently in Riruta in the Nairobi area, has so far examined some 240 patients, providing free medical care.
