The Government of the Republic of Cyprus considers the decision of the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the island to imprison Turkish Cypriots selling their properties in the Government-controlled areas of the Republic as being in the context of the regime`s efforts to create a negative climate regarding the Cyprus problem.

Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said the decision was ``in the context of the intimidation of the Turkish Cypriots, so as to eradicate the phenomenon of selling their properties in the free areas to Greek Cypriots.``

``I consider it to be in the general context regarding private transactions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the exchange or selling properties, either in the occupied areas by Greek Cypriots to Turkish Cypriots, or in the free areas by Turkish Cypriots to Greek Cypriots,`` he added.

Palmas noted that this was an unpleasant fact which emanates from the continuing occupation of Cyprus.

Replying to questions, Palmas said he did not know why the regime took its decision now, adding that it was probably ``within the framework of their efforts to create further negativity in relation to the Cyprus problem.``

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
