  • [01] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - CANDIDACY

President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos called on the people of the island to show him their ``trust and support, in order to secure together the course of Cyprus in the coming years,`` as he announced his candidacy for reelection in the February 2008 presidential elections.

In a televised statement from the Presidential Palace to the people of Cyprus, President Papadopoulos said he was running for reelection in order to continue striving for a settlement of the Cyprus problem, and that his guarantee was his so far policy and stance.

``I ask for your trust and your support to secure together the course of Cyprus in the coming years. To act as the communicator of your decisions and your vision. To continue to strive for a solution of the Cyprus problem, as the receiver of your mandate. The guarantee is my policy and stance so far,`` he said.

President Papadopoulos pointed out that the people knew him well, ``my advantages and my weaknesses, how I function as President of the Republic of Cyprus,`` adding that he did not act on personal ambition but was ready ``to pay any personal price.``

``My only wish is to contribute to the progress and prosperity of our country. To finding the solution we want, which we are entitled to and which we deserve. To the reunification of our homeland,`` he said.

[02] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - TURKISH ELECTIONS

A political settlement in Cyprus cannot come from the Greek Cypriots without Turkeys good will and Ankaras willingness to achieve this objective, Cyprus President has stressed, commenting on the outcome of Sundays parliamentary elections.

He also said that Nicosia as well as Athens have been monitoring developments in Turkey, not only now but also prior to the parliamentary elections, and will exchange views on this.

We believe it is premature and irresponsible to draw any conclusions at this early stage, as far as political developments in Turkey are concerned, Papadopoulos said, when asked to comment on the election results.
