  • [01] MOLLER APPEAL

Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cyprus Michael Moller called on President Papadopoulos and T/C Mehmet Ali Talat to proceed with the implementation of the July 8 Agreement.

With almost a year having passed since the 8 July agreement, it is time to fulfill the expectations raised when the leaders of the two communities signed their first agreement since the late seventies, Special Representative of the Secretary-General Michael Moller said at a medal ceremony for UN peacekeepers near UNFICYP Headquarters in Nicosia this evening.

Moller pointed out that now more than ever, the island needs a renewal of confidence and mutual trust in a joint commitment to resolve the Cyprus problem once and for all.

    [02] EEP PRESIDENT CYPRUS

European People`s Party President Wilfried Martens sent a clear message on Thursday that the failure of the 2004 referendum on the Annan plan did not mean that Turkey has been pardoned from its continued military occupation of Cypriot territory.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades, Martens noted that ``our common objective is none other than a unified Cyprus in a united Europe.``

``The continuing division of the island is a tragic anachronism and one which we are unwilling to accept,`` he pointed out.

He reassured of ``EPP`s unwavering support`` and noted ``our very clear position that the failure of the 2004 referendum does not mean that Turkey has been pardoned from its continued military occupation of Cypriot territory.``

    [03] FINANCE MINISTER SARRIS

Finance Minister Michalis Sarris described as very important element the fixing of the irrevocable exchange rate of the Cyprus pound against the euro which will take place on 10 July, and will set the irreversible relationship of the two currencies.

Indications show that the parity of the two currencies will remain at the current level. There was never any pressure exerted on the Cyprus pound, said Sarris, assuring that there are no reasons for concern.

Speaking during a meeting with journalists, Sarris said that the locking of the two currencies will be examined by the European Central Bank, the European Commission and Cypruss Finance Minister and Governor of the Central Bank.

He also said that as soon as the irrevocable exchange rate of the Cyprus pound against the euro is fixed, the government will begin an enlightenment campaign, while dual display of prices officially starts on September 1.

    [04] BAGHDATIS WIMBLEDON QUARTER FINALS

Popular Cypriot tennis player, Marcos Bagdhatis, swept aside sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, on Court 13 during the 4th round of the Wimbledon 2007 Championships, securing his place in the quarter-finals for the second year running.

In a match that would not have been out of place in a football stadium given the noise from his army of fans, according to the Wimbledon website, Baghdatis, ranked 16 in the world, faced the world number four on the other side of the net who last year beat the 22-year-old Cypriot in their one and only meeting in Miami.
