  • [01] ARCHBISHOP - ITALY

Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II returned satisfied from his meetings in Rome and the Vatican, noting that ``we did our duty to the full and now we are waiting for the results.``

Referring to his meetings with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Pope Benedict XVI and representatives of the Holy See, the Archbishop said that he elaborated on the problems faced by Cyprus and the Church as Turkey refuses to meet its obligations, emanating from its EU accession course.

He added that both the Vatican and Italy`s political leadership said they would exert their influence in that direction.

Archbishop Chrysostomos II said he received a very positive response by the Vatican and Rome regarding the destruction of the churches in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

The Ministers of Defence of Cyprus and Greece, Christodoulos Pashiardis and Evangelos Meimarakis, met in Athens on Tuesday and reaffirmed the excellent cooperation between the governments of the two countries.

Meimarakis assured Pashiardis that Greece`s support to Cyprus will be impartial and that Athens would actively participate in the security issues of the island until a viable, functional and just settlement of the Cyprus problem is achieved and the island is reunited.

The two Ministers discussed bilateral issues and cooperation between Athens and Nicosia in the framework of the European security and defence policy.
