  • [01] US UNDERSECRETARY - CYPRUS PROBLEM

U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns repeated his wish to visit Cyprus before the end of the year, to be supportive of a UN effort to push forward the peace process.

In a teleconference interview with Greek Journalists Nicholas Burns stated the following on the Cyprus issue, responding to questions:

I think also from my recent discussions with the Greek government, both of us want to see the United Nations make another attempt to be active on the question of Cyprus. I have been pushing this personally with the UN, as well as with other officials of other governments, and I personally believe that there should be an attempt to resolve the Cyprus question and I intend to go to Cyprus this year. I will probably go this year after the summertime.

Burns said "Cyprus is a friend of the United States" assuring that he wants to go to be supportive of the idea that "we will try to help the United Nations push forward the peace process".
