  • [01] NEW DEFENCE MINISTER - AFFIRMATION

The National Guards mission is so sensitive that any irresponsibility or intervention or public dispute might endanger the discipline and moral of the armed forces, President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos said on Monday.

He was speaking during the affirmation ceremony of new Defence Minister Christodoulos Pashiardis, who was appointed on Friday following the death of the late Minister Nicos Symeonides on 3 May.

Pashiardis, former Government Spokesman and Undersecretary to the President, said that as long as Turkey continues to occupy Cyprus territories, and be a threat against the island, the strengthening of our defence capabilities and that of the National Guard are not an option but a national obligation and its fulfillment can neither be disregarded nor postponed.

In his speech, President Papadopoulos said the protection of the integrity and freedom of our country which the National Guard has undertaken and serves is an issue which must be placed above persons and any expediency.

He expressed his regret over the death of Symeonides and praised yet again his contribution during his short term in office, noting that the new defence minister is fully aware of the responsibilities and obligations he is undertaking.

    [02] PALMAS - SPOKESMAN

New Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said on Monday it was an honour to take over the office from Christodoulos Pashiardis, who enjoyed special appreciation for his ethos, abilities and character in general.

Speaking during a ceremony to assume his new duties, Palmas noted that as Government Spokesman he could not be an endless source of information but would make very effort to support the media on a daily basis.

Pashiardis said he was sure the journalists would have a closer, friendlier and more effective cooperation with the new Government Spokesman, whose virtues include ethos and courtesy.

    [03] EGYPT - CYPRUS - NATURAL GAS

Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Fayza Abu al Naga said on Monday that Cyprus and Egypt have been discussing ways to export natural gas to Cyprus in a compressed form instead of its costlier liquefied form.

Speaking after a meeting in Nicosia with Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas, Abu al Naga said experts on both sides are in constant communication regarding this issue and pointed out that ``the most important thing is we consider this issue to be strategic for our cooperation.``

Lillikas expressed satisfaction with his meeting with the Egyptian Minister, with whom he discussed a series of sector in which Cyprus and Egypt can develop cooperation concerning ``the development of various sectors of Egypt and achieving the aims of the Egyptian government, also in the EU framework with the participation of Egypt in other African countries, especially in sectors where Egypt has a successful know-how and can contribute to the development of African countries.``
