[01] CYPRUS WELCOMES N. IRELAND DEAL
Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the restoration of the
partnership government in Northern Ireland on Tuesday 8 May, 2007.
``This is an event of major significance in the peace process, which
represents the beginning of a new era for Northern Ireland,`` the
Ministry said in a press release. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
particularly welcomes the commitment of the parties involved to put
their differences aside in an effort to build real and lasting
reconciliation.
It also praises the joint efforts made by the British and Irish
governments towards the full implementation of the Good Friday
(Belfast) Agreement. ``This is a historic breakthrough, committing all
participants to exclusively democratic and peaceful means of resolving
their differences, in a just, viable and mutually acceptable manner,``
the press release concludes.
[02] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - EUROPE DAY - GATHERING
Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said that the EU has a role
and a say in whatever effort to find a solution, which will be
compatible with the acquis communautaire as he addressed guests at a
special event to mark the anniversary of Cyprus` accession and the 50th
anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. He said that EU countries are
characterized by diversity, but all joined by the common values and
principles that make up the EU. Recalling the Berlin Declaration of 25
March 2007, President Papadopoulos said that we need to learn how to
live and work together within the EU for the prosperity of all, for
peace and solidarity among the members and meet our obligations as true
members of the EU. I am glad to say that Cyprus has met its obligations
within the EU to the full. We participate in discussions on all the
multilateral issues as well as other matters that concern the Union,``
the Cypriot President added.
Referring to the Cyprus problem, President Papadopoulos said that the
EU has a role and a say in whatever effort to find a solution which
will be compatible with the acquis communautaire and values. Pledging
Cyprus commitment to the Gambari agreement of July 8 2006, President
Papadopoulos said we expect solidarity and support from the EU in
getting this process going. So our goal is the implementation of the
July agreement which will pave the way for a truly reunified Cyprus and
by reunification we mean the unification of territory, society,
institutions and above all economy. ``We hope that the values and
principles of the EU and the UN Security Council resolutions strong
foundation and prosperity of Cyprus and all its people and
communities,`` he concluded.
In his speech, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus
Themis Themistocleous said that what Europeans most expect from the
Union are constructive policies which can result in an effective
institutional reform. Speeches were also delivered by the Çead of the
European Parliament Office in Cyprus Tasos Georgiou, who described the
day as the most historic day for Cyprus, and the Head of the European
Institute of Cyprus Dr Neophytos Chrysochos.
