[01] TZIONIS - PERTEV MEETINGNo progress was made during Mondays meeting between the Cypriot President`s Diplomatic office Director Tasos Tzionis and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat`s aide Rashid Pertev, with a bid to implement the July 8 agreement.Sources told CNA that during the two and a half-hour long meeting hosted by UN Secretary-General Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller, Pertev insisted on the positions proposed in the so-called reassessment of the Turkish Cypriot side`s position on the July agreement, which are based on the return of the Annan plan to the negotiating table. The same sources said that the meeting between the representatives of the two sides will continue. The Annan plan was rejected by Greek Cypriots and approved by the Turkish Cypriots, during April 24 2004 simultaneous referenda. On July 8 2006, Papadopoulos and Talat at the presence of the then UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrabim Gambari reached an agreement providing for the concurrent establishment of working groups to address substantive aspects of the Cyprus problem and technical committees to deal with the day-to-day problems that affect the people, as well as Confidence Building Measures. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] CYPRUS PRESIDENT SARKOZYCyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has sent a letter to Nicolas Sarkozy, congratulating him for his election as new President of the French Republic, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said.According to the Spokesman, in his letter, Papadopoulos after congratulating Sarkozy, ``expresses the conviction that the friendly relations between France and Cyprus will be promoted even further and that the close cooperation between the two countries would be expanded in all fields.`` Invited to comment on Sarkozy`s position that Turkey should be granted a special partnership with the EU and not the status of full member, Pashiardis said that the Cypriot government will not comment on the policy of any European country towards Turkeys accession prospects. [03] HOUSE PRESIDENT GREEK PREMIERPolitical developments in Turkey and the outcome of the elections in France, in relation to Cyprus, were the focus of the meetings President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Demetris Christofias has had with Greek Premier Costas Karamanlis and Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni.Speaking after the meetings, Christofias described his talks as substantive and very friendly, saying that Athens and Nicosia have to study very carefully political developments in Turkey and see how we react and what will emerge. He believes that Cyprus and Greece share the same language, common thoughts and views on the matter. [04] GREEK FM CYPRUS ISSUE CHINAGreeces Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis said that Cyprus issue will be on the agenda of her visit to China.Responding to questions, during a press conference in Athens, Bakoyannis expressed satisfaction for the way which the Chinese political leadership supports issues concerning the Cyprus question. Bakoyannis underlined that China follows consistently a policy of principles towards the Cyprus issue and the prospect of a solution, based on United Nations resolutions and decisions and the acquis communautaire as well.
