[01] COMMISSION - GREEN LINE - TRADEThe European Commission adopted a Decision on Friday authorising for the first time the trade in certain animal products, namely honey and fish, across the Green Line in Cyprus.This decision amends the Green Line Regulation, extending trade to both animal products, on condition that the relevant provisions of EU legislation are observed. According to the decision, a list of Turkish Cypriot fishing vessels will be made by a committee of independent Commission experts, thus permitting the control of quantities to be traded, which will be certified by the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce. The decision does not cover farmed fish. Regarding honey, before the product is traded, ten samples will be taken, which will then be examined by laboratories cooperating with the EU, in order to determine if the community health clauses are met. The amended regulation comes into effect Friday but its implementation in practice will begin after a group of independent experts is set up. [02] MEMORANDUM - MISSINGA joint delegation comprising members of the Cypriot and Greek Committees of Relatives of Missing Persons handed over memorandums on Friday to the embassies of the US, Russia and France and the British High Commission in Nicosia, while similar memorandums were sent to the embassies of China and the EU member states, as well as the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus.The memorandum, submitted on the occasion of the 23rd Marathon of Love for the Missing Persons, says that the non solution of the 33-year humanitarian problem of missing persons is a stigma on the international community. According to a press release issued by the Pancyprian Organisation of Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons, the memorandum notes that current developments, in the framework of the Committee of Missing Persons, are a step in the right direction, which however cannot be restricted to the exhumation of remains. [03] CYPRUS - UN - JULY 8Acting Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said on Friday the government accepted the positions expressed by the UN Secretariat and the Security Council regarding the July 8 agreement.Commenting on remarks by the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller that the process which started on July 8 is very much alive and that the differences between the two sides on the island were not excessive, Palmas noted that Moller was expressing the positions of the UN Secretariat and Security Council. ``We adopt these positions too and that is why we are trying, in the framework of the July 8 agreement, which is the only agreement since the rejection of the Annan plan by the Cypriot people, to create movement around the Cyprus problem,`` Palmas added. [04] CMP - NETHERLANDS - DONATIONThe Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus has expressed its gratitude to the government of the Netherlands for ``its generous donation of 250,000 Euros announced on the occasion of the Queens Day by the Dutch Ambassador in Cyprus.````This donation will help the CMP pursue its project on the exhumation, identification and return of remains of missing persons in Cyprus well into 2008,`` the Committee says in a press release. It adds ``it is estimated that the remains exhumed so far relate to over 250 individuals`` and that ``scientific examination of the remains is being carried out at the CMP Anthropological Laboratory in the buffer zone in Nicosia by a bi-communal team of anthropologists under the guidance of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team.`` Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
