  • [01] ARCHBISHOP OF GREECE - LARNACA

Larnaca citizens welcomed Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos with chimes, rose petals and brushes of myrtle as he arrived in the town on the fifth day of his visit to the island.

The welcoming ceremony was led by Bishop of Kition Chrysostomos, flanked by the church and municipal authorities of the town, including Ministers of Justice and Public Order and Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Sophocles Sophocleous and Fotis Fotiou respectively.

Students and pupils as well as MPs and scores of people gathered at the Kition Bishopric to get a glimpse of the head of the Greek Church, who was accompanied by Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II and the Bishops of Limassol Athanasios, Morphou Neophytos and Bishop of Vostron.

After attending a Te Deum at the Sotiras Church in Larnaca, the towns Bishop Chrysostomos referred to the sincere and true friendship and cooperation he has with Archbishop Christodoulos, noting that the Primate of the Greek Church showed his true love to the people of Cyprus, especially during the tragic days of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

In his reply, the Greek Archbishop said that the Church of Cyprus has been an endless source of inspiration and solace for Cypriot Hellenism during all historical times and constitutes a spiritual strength to treat the wounds of the recent past and make fuller use of the new European perspective.

He also referred to the multifaceted social and charitable work which Bishop of Kition Chrysostomos carries out, as well as the charities which he has helped start and continue their work.
