  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - SLOVENIA

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said that the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have confirmed that the only existing process for a Cyprus settlement is the implementation of the July 8 agreement.

In statements at Larnaca Airport before departing for Slovenia, where he will pay a four-day official visit, the President noted that this is also our position.

There are no specific measures one can take, he said, responding to a question, adding that in a meeting yesterday with the five ambassadors they confirmed that the only process they see today is the implementation of the July 8 agreement without any conditions.

Responding to another question, he said he has not yet received an invitation from European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso for a mini summit to be held on May 12 and 13 in Brussels.

As regards his visit to Slovenia, President Papadopoulos noted that this country will be the first of the ten new EU members to assume the EU presidency, the first half of 2008.

Slovenias experiences and preparations will be very helpful for our case, he said.

He further noted that Slovenia joined the Eurozone on January 1, 2007, and its experience in this field is also very useful.

President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of former UN Undersecretary General for political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] HOON - CYPRUS

British Minister for Europe Geoff Hoon said here on Wednesday that with Turkeys application to join the EU there is a strategic opportunity to resolve long-standing, difficult, sensitive questions, adding that ``the UK is willing to help.

Speaking after talks held in Nicosia with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas, Hoon noted that the British government can help facilitate the process of the July 8 agreement but it is the others who have to make it happen, adding that diplomatic issues require flexibility, require confidence, require mutual understanding.

The two officials agreed that Hoons visit marks the beginning of a new and still better relationship between the two countries.

Lillikas and Hoon announced a new stage in our relationship, namely the creation of a UK-Cyprus forum in which government ministers, political leaders, opinion formers and academics will have the opportunity of exchanging views on a range of matters of mutual interest.

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas will participate in the trans-Atlantic dinner for the Foreign Ministers of NATO and EU countries to be held on April 26 in Oslo, Norway.

According to an official press release, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero Waldner and NATOs Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will also be present at the dinner.

Lillikas returns home on April 27.

    [04] SAN MARINO - CYPRUS

Secretary for Foreign and Political Affairs of the Republic of San Marino Fiorenzo Stolfi arrives in Cyprus tomorrow for a three-day official visit.

According to the programme of the visit, Cyprus and the Republic of San Marino will sign an Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with Respect to Taxes on Income.
