  • [01] CYPRUS - SLOVAKIA - PRESIDENTS - TALKS

Slovakian President Ivan Gasparovic, who is on an official visit to Cyprus, said the time has come for the EU to take a more concrete and absolute stance as far as Turkey, complying with the conditions and obligations deriving from its accession negotiations and set a timeframe for this purpose.

He was speaking after talks with President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos where he stressed that Slovakia will do everything possible to solve the Cyprus problem in a positive manner for Cyprus.

On his part, President Papadopoulos expressed the hope that the UN Secretariat and the Security Council will call on the Turkish Cypriot side to reactivate unconditionally the Gambari procedure on Cyprus.

He also said he was satisfied with Slovakias efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, adding that both countries have identical views on many issues.

Papadopoulos said the two discussed bilateral relations and ways to further promote these relations, as well as international issues which affect both countries. I am pleased that in many issues we have identical views, he said.

The Cypriot President said that Slovakias developing economy and industry exhibits attractive opportunities for Cypriots and we are happy that the President is accompanied by a delegation of business people from Slovakia.

    [02] GOVERNMENT LYMPIA

The government is willing to examine the possibility to move parts of a waste disposal plant, responding to proposals by the representatives of the village of Lympia and the Union of Communities.

On Tuesday, Lympia residents blocked the Nicosia-Larnaca motorway in both directions, threw rocks onto the motorway and set fire to tyres and cars, which they dropped onto the motorway from a bridge, protesting against the governments decision to construct a waste disposal plant in their area.

The Council of Ministers discussed the issue on Wednesday, after a meeting held between the Minister of the Interior Neoklis Sylikiotis and the representatives of the residents of the community early in the morning. On Tuesday evening, the residents were asked by their representatives to lift the blockades and measures in order to contribute to a positive climate for negotiations with the government.

Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis, speaking after the Councils meeting, said that the government is willing to examine the possibility to move some parts of the plant, as long as there is no danger to the environment and public health and as long as this move satisfies the community of Lympia.

Responding to questions, the Spokesman said that the move can take place within 1 km of the original site and that the government is now waiting for the answer of the community of Lympia.

The governments position towards the proposal of the President and the representatives of the community is clear and reasonable. We will now wait for the response of the community of Lympia, he said, concluding that what counts is for all sides to show prudence and responsibility.

    [03] MORPHOU SETTLERS

The Mayor Morphou Charalambos Pittas said that the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus is bringing settlers to the occupied town of Morphou, in an effort to reap political gains.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee for Refugees, Pittas said that the occupation regime is using tricks and blackmail techniques, allocating land and properties not only to Turkish Cypriots but also settlers from Turkey, in order to prevent the return of the town to its legitimate citizens in case of a settlement of the long standing political problem of the island.

Pittas further said that the municipality has launched a campaign to prevent this development with contacts with British MPs who will raise the issue at the British parliament and government.
