  • [01] LYMBIA RESIDENTS - DEMONSTRATIONS

Residents of Lymbia village, who are protesting the governments decision to construct a waste disposal plant in their area, have been called upon to stop their demonstrations which they began last night with motorway blockades.

The Lymbia community maintains that the plant should not be constructed in the proposed area, saying this would be an environmental hazard for the nearby area. The plant will cater for the Larnaca Famagusta area. However the government is adamant that the construction should proceed.

A delegation by the Lymbia community held a series of meetings today with Cypriot political parties, who called upon the Lymbia residents to lift their demonstrations.

Lymbia community leader Sofoklis Savas said that a meeting between Minister of the Interior Neoclis Silikiotis and a Lymbia delegation will take place tomorrow morning to discuss the issue.

He also called upon the Lymbia residents to return to their homes so that the motorway opens again for traffic.

The Lymbia residents blocked today the Nicosia Larnaca motorway in both directions, threw rocks onto the motorway and set fire to tyres and cars which they dropped onto the highway from a bridge.
