[01] LILLIKAS - JULY 8 AGREEMENTCypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said on Friday that there was currently no process which would create the preconditions for the resumption of talks, aiming at a Cyprus settlement other than the July 8 agreement. He added that the effort of the Greek Cypriot side focused on preventing the agreement from collapsing, which the Turkish side had sought to clinch, and to implement it. Commenting on remarks by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Gul that the Turkish side supported the July 8 agreement, Lillikas said that this statement could not be accepted, unless Gul had not been briefed on recent actions of the Turkish Cypriot side. Lillikas pointed out that ``if there is good will and if the Turkish Cypriot leadership and the Turkish government have not changed their position on the July 8 agreement, they must show this in practice.`` The Minister did not rule out a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, noting that the government`s effort was focused on ``not allowing the agreement to collapse, which the Turkish side has sought, but on the contrary, to keep it alive and to implement it.`` ``There is no other process alive at this moment or process which could pave the way and create the conditions for the resumption of comprehensive talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem,`` he said. [02] EU - TRADEThe German Presidency of the European Union has described as unfounded and without substance press reports accusing the Presidency of having dropped from its agenda the issue of special conditions for trade with the Turkish-Cypriot community. The EU Foreign Affairs Council concluded under the German EU Presidency on January 22nd that work aiming at the adoption of the Commission proposal for a Council Regulation on special conditions for trade with the areas of the Republic of Cyprus in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control must resume without delay, a press release of the German Presidency says. It also noted that consultations were taken up by the German EU Presidency in February 2007 and are to continue. [03] LILLIKAS - LEDRA STREETCypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said on Friday that there was no change in the stance of the Turkish side regarding the opening of a crossing point in Ledra Street.Īn the contrary, he pointed out, there was yet another provocative demonstration of intransigence on behalf of the Turkish side with its statements that the Turkish troops would not be withdrawn from the area. Lillikas said there was nothing new to report on the issue. ``We have seen no change on the part of the Turkish side. On the contrary, with statements regarding the refusal to remove the Turkish troops from the area, I believe we have yet another provocative demonstration of intransigence by the Turkish side,`` he pointed out. [04] MATSAKIS - REPRESENTATIONSThe Cypriot government has made representations over the arrest of MEP Marios Matsakis by the British Bases police but there has been no outcome yet, Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said on Friday.Replying to questions, Lillikas said ``representations were made from the first moment, which have so far not yielded results.`` Asked if this would be the right time to clarify the status of the British Bases on the island, Lillikas pointed out that ``in such serious issues, things must be discussed in the appropriate way and at the right time and not circumstantially and based on various events which do not originate or have not been planned by either the Cypriot or the British government.`` Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
