  • [01] US AMBASSADOR - CYPRUS QUESTION

US Ambassador to Cyprus Ronald Schlicher called on the two communities in Cyprus to use the progress made on the Ledra Street issue as a lever to create broader progress in the July 8 process and get the process going.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Interior Minister Neoklis Silikiotis, Schlicher urged that progress be made, stressing that time is of the essence.

[02] LEFT PARTIES - MEETING RESOLUTIONS

The two-day Euro-Mediterranean meeting of Left Parties, hosted by Cypriot AKEL party in Nicosia, wrapped up Sunday with the approval of two resolutions, regarding the Cyprus problem and the Palestinian question, with special reference to the formation of a Palestinian national unity government between Hamas and Fatah.

In statements after the meeting, AKEL Spokesman Antros Kyprianou said the Nicosia meeting agreed on setting up a committee which will prepare the next Euro-Mediterranean Meeting of Left Parties.

According to Kyprianou, the two-day meeting focused ``on the Cyprus problem, the situation in Iraq, four years after the US-led coalition invasion, the Palestinian issue and the threats expressed by the US against Iran, giving special emphasis on the causes which lie behind the efforts of the United States and their allies to control the region``

On Cyprus, the left parties reaffirm their support to a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the basis of international law, UN resolutions on Cyprus and the acquis communautaire, considering that the solution of the Cyprus problem should safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms.
