  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS EURO

President of the Republic, Tassos Papadopoulos, has said that the Cypriot parliamentary parties have given a positive signal during Thursdays debate at the House of Representatives regarding the adoption of the bills for Cyprus accession to the Eurozone.

I believe that the best message was given by the parties, irrespective of any disputes regarding the date of implementing the plan. All parties want to cooperate in order to minimize any difficulties or negative impact that could arise from our accession to the Eurozone and this is very important, he said.

In statements on the sidelines of the reception for Irelands National Day, in Nicosia, President Papadopoulos said that the government`s duty was to give all necessary tools and prepare the legal framework for the adoption of the Euro.

The implementation of the measures, he noted, does not entirely depend on the government, but on non governmental organizations and on the citizens as well.

We provide the citizens with a tool. It depends on them to assert effectively their rights, he concluded.

The Cypriot House of Representatives plenary voted in favour of bills for Cyprus` entry into the Eurozone on 1 January 2008, with 36 votes in favour from the Democratic Rally, the Democratic Party, the European Party, the Social Democrats` Movement EDEK and the Ecologists and Environmentalists` Movement, and 15 against from AKEL.

The Republic of Cyprus entered the EU in May 2004. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] COMMISSION CYPRUS EURO

EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia`s spokeswoman, Amelia Torres, described as a ``positive fact`` the adoption by the Cypriot House of Representatives of the four bills for Cyprus` entry into the Eurozone on 1 January 2008.

``The European Commission takes into consideration this positive fact``, she said.

Torres added that the European Commissions DG for Economic and Monetary Affairs as well as the European Central Bank are already evaluating Cyprus application for accession to the Eurozone.

She said that all legal and economic criteria will be first evaluated and expressed the view that the whole procedure will be concluded in May.

Explaining the procedure, she said that when Cyprus fulfills the necessary criteria, then the European Commission will make a recommendation to the Economic and Financial Affairs Council for Cyprus accession to the Eurozone.

    [03] SPOKESMAN TALAT

The Turkish sides stance proves once more that it does not want the opening of the Limnitis crossing point, said Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes.

During his daily briefing, Pashiardes was invited to comment on statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat that the Turkish Cypriot side will not remove any soldiers from Nicosia, and that they will not allow any other crossing point to open apart from the one at Ledra Street.

By this statement, Talat is admitting the truth, which we have been reiterating for a long time now, namely that the Turkish occupation army is solely responsible for the opening of the Ledra Street crossing point as well as other crossing points, he noted.

Amidst Talats protests, the government of Cyprus proceeded on March 13th unilaterally with preparations for the opening of the Limnitis crossing point, that would allow Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to cross to and from the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

    [04] CYPRUS EU CELEBRATIONS

The European principles and values offer Cyprus the possibility to look with optimism to the future for a reunited Cyprus, Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Yiorgos Lillikas said.

Speaking during a press conference given at the EU House on the occasion of the celebrations for the anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, Lillikas said that building on the European accomplishment and through a dialogue procedure, we hope to reunite our country.

Celebrations in Cyprus will begin on the 22nd of March and end on Europe Day, the 9th of May. The Ministries of Education, Communication and Works, Foreign Affairs, Finance, the Central Bank of Cyprus, the Press and Information Office, the Postal Services, as well as the Representation of the European Commission and the Office of the European Parliament in Cyprus will contribute to the celebration.
