[01] ACTING PRESIDENT - DIRECT TRADE
Acting President, House President Demetris Christofias has said that
the insistence of some European Commission circles on direct trade
between the EU and Cyprus Turkish occupied areas treads on unanimous
decisions by the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.
Christofias expressed hope that during 2007 technical committees to
prepare the ground for substantive negotiations, in line with a
UN-brokered agreement between the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot sides,
will begin their work, and he also sent a message of friendship and
rapprochement to the Turkish Cypriots.
Christofias said that attempts by Commission circles to begin direct
trade with the occupied areas trample on unilateral decisions of the UN
Security Council and the General Assembly which condemn Turkey as a
state that invaded Cyprus illegally, violating international law.
[02] US - CYPRUS - OIL EXPLORATION
All sovereign governments have the right of making contracts with
private entities, US State Department Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey has
said, when asked if he agrees with a statement by US Ambassador to
Cyprus that it`s the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to make
agreements in oil and petroleum exploration.
I assume that all sovereign governments have the rights of sovereign
governments. And making contracts between that government would be one
-- and private entities would be one of them, Casey said.
[03] BRITISH OFFICIAL - CYPRUS QUESTION
The British government remains committed to achieving a fair, viable
and lasting settlement in Cyprus for the benefit of all Cypriots,
pledged Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign and
Commonwealth Office Lord Triesman.
Answering questions at the House of Lords, Lord Triesman said the
United Kingdom Government remains committed to achieving a fair, viable
and lasting settlement in Cyprus for the benefit of all Cypriots.
We believe, he added, that this can be achieved only through a UN-led
process supported by both communities. We will therefore continue to
maintain our contact with all parties and encourage all sides to show
the necessary political will to engage constructively with the UN`s
efforts aimed at preparing the ground for a fully fledged settlement
negotiation.
