    [03] FM - TURKEY - OIL

Cypriot Foreign Minister George Lillikas has said that Turkey must prove in deeds that it can become a European country, by adopting a European political culture and abandoning its anachronistic method of threats towards its neighboring countries, including the Republic of Cyprus. Lillikas was replying to questions on Turkeys protests and threats regarding the separate agreements signed by the Republic of Cyprus with Egypt and with Lebanon for the delimitation of its exclusive economic zone to explore and exploit hydrocarbon reserves.

Speaking during a joint press conference he held in Ljubljana with his Slovenian counterpart Dimitrij Rupel, Lillikas stressed that the agreements have been signed according to international law of the sea, they concern Cyprus, Lebanon and Egypt and that no other country has the right to intervene. If any state has any claims, I would refer them to the International Court at The Hague, he said. He assured that Cyprus would continue its policy to implement measures that have to do with its national interest, always in the framework of the international law and in collaboration with Egypt and Lebanon.

The Slovenian Minister told reporters that during the meeting they discussed relations between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey and he reiterated his countrys support for the Cypriot positions. I would like to stress that Cyprus and Slovenia share common positions on international problems and practically we agree and support each other on these issues, Rupel said. On the EU Turkey relations, he said that Slovenia has a very positive stance regarding Cyprus` positions, and noted that Slovenias and Cyprus views are very close.
