  • [01] UNSG - TURKISH FM - CYPRUS QUESTION

The Cyprus problem was among the issues discussed during a meeting Friday between the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who is paying a visit to the US.

According to a statement read out by a UN Spokesperson, on Cyprus, Ban and Gul ``agreed that the 8 July 2006 agreement between the two sides must be implemented without further delay.``

Diplomatic sources said that during the meeting, Gul asked the Secretary-General to continue to call for the lifting of the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, as his predecessor Kofi Annan did. According to the same sources, the Turkish FM also outlined Ankara`s position on the issue of oil exploitation in the eastern Mediterranean.

Ban and Gul also discussed the Alliance of Civilizations and Iraq.

On the Alliance of Civilizations, they agreed on the importance of appointing a High Representative for the Alliance, as was recommended by the Alliances High-level Group in November 2006, while on Iraq, they exchanged views on the general situation, including Kirkuk.

According to the UN spokesperson, Ban and Gul also touched upon Lebanon, as well as terrorism in general.

On July 8th 2006, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat met in the presence of senior UN official Imbrahim Gambari and agreed to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and those that concern substantive issues.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in May 2004, has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] CYPRIOT - UEFA - TREASURER

Cypriot Marios Lefkaritis was elected Friday as UEFA`s treasurer, during UEFA`s executive committee meeting in Nyon, Switzerland, under the chairmanship of Michel Platini, who was elected to the presidency at UEFA`s congress in Dusseldorf last month.

Lefkaritis was also appointed as member of the FIFA Executive Committee.
