[01] LILLIKAS - TALAT - NATURAL WEALTHCypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said on Saturday that the only way for all citizens of the Republic of Cyprus to enjoy the country`s natural wealth is through dialogue and not threats.Lillikas was commenting on statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat that there would be trouble if Cyprus proceeded with the exploitation of possible hydrocarbons in its economic zone. The Minister said the Republic of Cyprus is a sovereign state and that the government had studied all the aspects and dimensions of the issue, noting that ``our cooperation with neighbouring countries, sovereign states of the region, will continue.`` Lillikas pointed out that at the moment the Turkish Cypriots were enjoying the wealth of the Republic of Cyprus but not contributing to it. ``So, the only way for all the citizens and communities of the Republic of Cyprus to harmoniously participate in economic growth, the sharing of the national wealth produced, and to live peacefully and in harmony, is through a solution and the reunification of Cyprus,`` he said. Lillikas noted that ``at a time when the EU and the international community are trying to restore the sovereignty of Lebanon, to restore peace and stability in the region, the policy and interventions of Turkey, instead of contributing to stability in the region, are leading to instability.`` He pointed out that with threats and blackmail, Turkey ``affirms that it has not become europeanised concerning its political behaviour and its approaches, but remains stuck in anachronistic notions and approaches of the past, which are based on intervention in the sovereign rights of sovereign states.`` [02] US - UN - CYPRUSThe US will do everything it can to support the new UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon`s efforts on Cyprus, State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said Friday, adding that it is quite clear that Ban has an idea of what he wants to do on Cyprus.McCormack was invited to comment on Ban`s statement during a visit to Brussels that he intends to call on the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to implement the July 8 agreement. According to McCormack, ``Ban is picking up where Secretary General Annan left off, using his good offices to try to find a solution to a longstanding conflict.`` Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
