Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said on Thursday that Turkey`s proposal to open a single port and a single airport to Cypriot ships and airplanes was a preplanned move to impress, which came as no surprise to the Republic of Cyprus.

He described the Turkish proposal as "ridiculing" the European Union, since it fell short of any serious content, noting that if a compromise safeguarding Cyprus` fundamental interests cannot be achieved among the EU member states, then Cyprus can live without conclusions.

Commenting on Ankara`s proposal to the EU Finnish presidency, Lillikas said "Turkey is clearly disregarding and violating its obligation to recognise the Republic of Cyprus, since it is referring to `Greek Cypriot ships and products` and `the south`."

He added that the Republic of Cyprus expects the EU presidency and the European Commission to reiterate and insist on the fact that Turkey`s obligations are autonomous and not linked in any way to other matters.

Lillikas noted that the Republic of Cyprus also expects the representatives of the Commission to defend the unanimous and binding decisions of the Union.
