[01] LILLIKAS - OSCE - MEETINGCypriot Foreign Minister George Lillikas, in a meeting with OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, expressed Nicosias disappointment over Turkey preventing Cyprus accession in the Treaty of Open Skies.Lillikas met de Brichambaut on the sidelines of the 14th meeting of the annual Ministerial Council of the 56 OSCE participating States in Brussels where they examined the role which Cyprus can play in strengthening the Mediterranean dimension of the OSCE. The organisations Secretary-General accepted an invitation by Lillikas to visit Cyprus at the end of January. Addressing the Council, Lillikas welcomed its results and reconfirmed the significance which the Republic of Cyprus attaches in improving its effectiveness and ability to respond to the new challenges. Lillikas accused Turkey for its unacceptable stance towards Cypruss efforts to become a member of the Treaty of Open Skies and expressed the hope that soon it will realize that the aim of serving the common interests of the OSCE should be above political expediencies of isolated member states. The Cypriot minister also held bilateral meetings with his European counterparts on the sidelines of the council, in view of the EU General Affairs Council on 11-12 December which will concentrate on Turkeys EU course. He also analysed the Cypriot positions and proposals which aim at securing the preconditions and control mechanism on Turkey, so that Turkeys EU course will be accompanied by the implementation of its obligations towards the EU and member states. On November 29, the European Commission said it was recommending a partial suspension of Turkey`s EU membership talks for refusing to open its ports and airports to Cypriot vessels and aircraft. The Commission said eight out of 35 negotiating chapters would be put on hold. [02] IVANOV - CYPRUSRussias policy on Cyprus remains firm, stated Vice President of the Russian Federation and Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, in an interview with CNÁ and the Athens Eleftherotypia newspaper.Prior to the start of his official visit to Greece, Ivanov, one of the closest associates of President Vladimir Putin spoke about the need for the exact implementation of Security Council resolutions on Cyprus. Invited to comment on the latest developments on Cyprus, Ivanov said I can assure you with utmost responsibility that our position on the Cyprus problem has not changed. He said just as we were in the past, so we shall continue to be in favour of the precise implementation of the Security Council resolutions, bearing in mind the free expression of will of the two communities and without any outside imposition of decisions. [03] CHRISTOFIAS - ROMANIARomanias President Traian Basescu expressed crystal clear views as regards developments concerning Turkeys implementation of its EU obligations, stressing that Turkey cannot avoid implementing its obligations.The position was conveyed by House President Demetris Christofias who wrapped up his official visit to Romania. Christofias said the President of Romania considers Turkeys stance unacceptable as far as the implementation of its obligations is concerned and its stance on solving the Cyprus problem and the islands reunification. The House President said that Christofias position was based on principles, adding that Bucharest is in favour of the islands reunification, in a solution which will be based on the will of the people of Cyprus and which will be to the interests of Cypriots.
