[01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - TURKEY - EU - CYPRUS
Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos pointed out on Friday evening
that joining the European Union was not a menu one chooses a la carte
so, if Turkey really wanted to accede to the EU, it must comply with
the acquis communautaire or not join at all.
Speaking at a press conference in Rome, President Papadopoulos said
``we have supported the application of Turkey to the EU on one
important consideration, that Turkey, like every other applicant state,
should comply with the acquis communitaire and the obligations it has
towards the EU and the Republic of Cyprus.``
``Every country has to comply and convince both the Commission and the
Council of its compliance with the principles on which the EU has been
founded and to give clear proof that these rights will be upheld and
respected,`` the President noted.
