  • [01] ARCHBISHOPRIC ELECTIONS - RESULTS

The sixty three refugee ballot boxes, which showed problems in Sundays elections for the special representatives for the first phase of the elections for the new Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus, were examined one by one by the acting primate of the Church Bishop of Paphos Chrysostomos and the head of the Church election body Yiannis Harilaou.

Bishop Chrysostomos said that during a meeting with Harilaou and his associates it was decided that many representatives of the groups supporting the candidates would not be allowed in because the anomalies were the result of the fanaticism of some of these representatives.

He added that paid assistance was requested from civil servants who have experience in counting procedures in order to speed up the process.

Replying to questions, Bishop Chrysostomos said there had been no tampering with the ballot boxes and that the voting process was carried out in an excellent atmosphere.

Harilaou pointed out that some ballot boxes did not have the necessary accompanying documents, which resulted in protests from some representatives.

Orthodox Christians in Cyprus went to the polls on Sunday after 29 years, to elect 1,400 special representatives for the first phase of the elections. The procedure will culminate in early November with the announcement of the new Archbishop.

    [02] FRENCH PM - TURKEY - CYPRUS

French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin warned Turkey that it would face consequences if it failed to fully open its ports and airports to Cypriot vessels and aircraft.

Speaking during a joint press conference with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, de Villepin said it is very important that Turkey understand it must respect its commitments, respect them in spirit and in letter, otherwise the Europeans will be obliged to draw their conclusions.
