  • [01] CYPRUS - GREEK VESSEL - LEBANON

All evacuees from Lebanon, who arrived early this morning on board the Greek vessel Ierapetra, have now disembarked, Omiros Mavrommatis, Director of Consular Affairs at the Cyprus Foreign Ministry has told CNA.

The vessel was chartered by the French government to evacuate French citizens from Lebanon, and transferred to Cyprus people of several nationalities, many of whom were injured. Anybody who needed medical care was treated at local hospitals.

``Everybody on board was taken care of by the Cypriot authorities, most of them are at Larnaca airport for the journey home and others are waiting for some formalities to be sorted out before leaving,`` Mavrommatis said.

Cyprus Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Sotos Zakheos had said earlier today that Cyprus is making arrangements in cooperation with Greece to transfer 11 Cypriots, including the three Cypriot children, who were on vacation at their grandparents house in Nabadiye, and were not transferred with Ierapetra ship.

We are making arrangements so that everyone is returns home, Zakheos said.

He noted that a Greek naval frigate is scheduled to depart from Greece for Lebanon and the plan is to help 11 Cypriots and 83 Greek nationals to board the frigate.

Cyprus Health Minister Haris Charalambours said the Ministry is on full alert and ready to provide medical assistance. It has sent doctors, nurses and ambulances to ports and airports where people are arriving from Lebanon.

Charalambous said that Ierapetra is scheduled to set sail tonight again for Lebanon, carrying a second team of doctors, nurses, child psychologists and social workers.

Responding to questions, he said a 13 year old boy of French-German citizenship, whose parents have died in Lebanon, is receiving medical treatment in Larnaca.

[02] EU FMs - MIDDLE EAST - CYPRUS

Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuommioja, whose country currently holds the EU Presidency, has made a special reference to the services offered by Cyprus for the evacuation of EU and other citizens from Lebanon.

The EU Foreign Ministers Council discussed Monday the situation in the Middle East and appealed to all parties to ensure the safe and speedy passage from Lebanon of those citizens of EU member states, as well as other expatriates, who wish to leave Lebanon.

Speaking during the Council meeting, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Lillikas briefed his EU counterparts on government initiatives to provide assistance in the effort to evacuate Cypriots and other EU citizens from Lebanon.

He said Cyprus has already placed at the disposal of the EU its infrastructure ports, airports and hospitals to facilitate the operation.
