Deputy Minister to the President and Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis has described the decisions of the so-called properties commission for the properties of three Greek Cypriots in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus as ``deceiving``.

One day before the deadline that the European Court of Human Rights set in the case of Greek Cypriot Myra Xenides - Arestis from occupied Famagusta, for Turkey to introduce remedies to protect the Greek Cypriots` right to property, the so called commission announced earlier its decision to return the properties of the two Greek Cypriots in occupied Akanthou, while it will give compensation to a third Greek Cypriot, without specifying the figure to be granted.

``The Cypriot government reiterates its position that this is a deceiving move by Turkey, in a bid to show that there is a satisfactory mechanism for compensations for all Greek Cypriot refugees,`` Pashiardis says in a written statement.

According to Pashiardis, the fact that the ``committee`` selected this day to announce its relative decisions deliberately coincides with the deadline for Turkey to submit its views regarding the effectiveness of measures to comply with ECHR`s ruling on Arestis` case.

``The selective return of properties to two Greek Cypriots, the unclarified compensation to one Greek Cypriot for his appropriated property and the proposed compensation to Mrs Arestis with the accompanying letter that her property can be return after the solution of the Cyprus problem, do not provide the compensation ruled by the ECHR, namely the restoration of the right to property to all legal holders. These are mere tricks of convenience with expiry date with the aim of luring some Greek Cypriots to assist Turkey`s effort to get away with the continued crime of usurpation of Greek Cypriots properties,`` the spokesman notes.

Pashiardis also points out that ``the Cypriot government acknowledges the right of every citizen of the Republic to exercise every offered legal means to claim the respect and application of its individual rights,`` pointing out however that ``the exercise of this right through an illegal compensation committee in the pseudo state offers good service to the Turkish side`s efforts, which denies to provide full application to the inalienable right of all Greek Cypriots to regain their illegaly occupied properties.``

The ECHR found on December 22 2005 Turkey guilty of violating the human rights a Greek Cypriot refugee in terms of her property in Turkish occupied Cyprus and ordred Ankara to put in place, within six months, a mechanism to offer reparations.

    [02] LILLIKAS - ATHENS

Cyprus Foreign Minister George Lillikas holds a series of meetings today in Athens on developments in the Cyprus problem and European Union matters. The Cypriot Minister will be received by Greek President Karolos Papoulias and hold talks with his Greek counterpart Dora Bakoyiannis, Development Minister Demetris Sioufas and opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou. In the evening, Lillikas will fly on to Portugal for a working visit during which he will have talks with the country`s Foreign Minister Diogo Freitas do Amaral.

    [03] DEFENCE MINISTER - ATHENS

New Cyprus Minister of Defence Phivos Klokkaris will meet his Greek counterpart Evangelos Meimarakis, next Tuesday, June 27. Klokkaris assumed office in June 13 as part of a major government reshuffle under President Tassos Papadopoulos.
