  • [01] AUSTRIA AGREEMENT

Cyprus and Austria have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of public health during a meeting Cyprus Health Minister Andreas Gavrilides and Austrian Minister for Health and Women Maria Rauch-Kallat had in Luxembourg on June 2.

An official press release issued here today said that both countries have expressed strong interest in boosting in every way their cooperation in health matters and said that the agreement will be to the benefit of both sides.

The agreement provides, among other things, for the exchange of visits of experts and specialists, joint scientific programmes, training and education of health staff and the exchange of statistic and epidemiological data.

    [02] ALBANIAN AMBASSADOR - OIC

The Government of Albania welcomes and supports every initiative that aims to find a final solution for the reunification of Cyprus, where the full will of the interested parties will be reflected, new Ambassador of the Republic of Albania to Cyprus, stationed in Athens, Vili Shefki Minarolli has said.

Presenting his credentials today to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, Minarolli also expressed the conviction that the parties will take advantage of any opportunity and will cooperate in a constructive spirit aiming at the achievement of a final and a stable solution.

Replying, President Papadopoulos referring to the Cyprus question said that at this crucial time, we continue to seek the support and assistance of our friends and my Government will, therefore, greatly appreciate Albania`s support and understanding within the OIC in rebuffing any efforts by Turkey to upgrade its illegal secessionist entity and safeguarding that OIC decisions will be consistent with the UN Charter and Resolutions, particularly Security Council Resolutions 541 and 550.

The Albanian Ambassador said his country has defined as the main priority the integration to the European family and to the Euro Atlantic Structures and in this respect, we would highly appreciate your experience in the long process of integration to the European Union.

I`m convinced that in this historic process, Cyprus, as a member of the EU, will stand close to Albania, he added.

    [03] COLOMBIA CREDENTIALS

New Ambassador of Colombia Dr. Luis Camilo Osorio has expressed the sincere wish of the people and the government of his country for a quick Cyprus settlement, to the benefit of all the citizens of the island.

Presenting his credentials to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, he also expressed the will of the government of Colombia to upgrade bilateral and multilateral relations, through initiatives for high importance cooperation in the fields of economy, justice, culture and education, to the benefit of the two countries as well as the international community.

Replying, President Papadopoulos referred to the Cyprus issue, noting that Greek Cypriot side expects the Turkish side to respond positively to the procedure agreed in Paris with the UN Secretary-General in February, in order - as the Paris Communique notes to improve the atmosphere for further talks, if progress could be achieved on further disengagement of forces and demilitarization on the Island, on the complete de-mining of Cyprus, and on the issue of Famagusta.

As regards Turkey`s beginning of accession negotiations with the European Union last October, he noted that Cyprus has demonstrated a constructive approach in this respect. We expect Turkey to respond to the goodwill we have exhibited and meet all its political and legal obligations vis-a-vis the European Union and its member states, including the unconditional ratification of the Protocol extending its customs union to the ten new member states. It is unacceptable that Turkey demands trade-offs in order to perform its own obligations towards the European Union.
