[01] US - CYPRUS PROBLEM - ELECTIONS
The United States continue to believe that there should be a peaceful
resolution of the Cyprus problem based on the settlement plan proposed
by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Acting Spokesman of the US State Department Tom Casey, replying to
questions regarding Sunday`s parliamentary elections in Cyprus and to a
remark that it seems the political forces that opposed the Annan plan
came out strengthened, said he had not yet seen the final results and
thus did not want to comment.
``In terms of our policy towards Cyprus, though, US policy remains the
same on that. We continue to believe that there should be a peaceful
resolution to the disputes on the island using the Annan plan`s
basis,`` he added.
[02] HOLY SYNOD - ARCHBISHOPRIC ELECTIONS
The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus convenes today to discuss the
results of a broad meeting of clergymen in Switzerland last week and to
decide to proclaim and carry out elections for the seat of Archbishop.
Last week, a broad meeting of senior clergymen, chaired by the head of
the Greek Orthodox Church Patriarch Bartholomew, convened in
Switzerland and decided to honourably vacate the position of Archbishop
of the Church of Cyprus, a move that will lead to elections for a new
Archbishop.
[03] MAVROYIANNIS - ANNAN - LETTER - TALAT
Cyprus` Permanent Representative to the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis, in a
letter to the UN Secretary General, restores the truth as regards the
distortion of Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos` position regarding
the issue of a federal solution by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali
Talat, an official press release issued here said.
Mavroyiannis said that Talat`s letter of 8 May 2006 ``makes various
incorrect assertions and draws distorted conclusions about the content
of an interview of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Tassos
Papadopoulos, which was published in the French Magazine L` Express on
4 May 2006.``
