  • [01] SENIOR UN OFFICIAL - NEW YORK - CYPRUS

Secretary-Generals Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller, in New York to attend the annual meeting between the Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Heads of UN Peacekeeping Missions, is holding contacts regarding the Cyprus problem.

Moller is expected to discuss with Annan both the Cyprus problem and UNFICYP`s mandate renewal in view of the SG`s report, expected to be submitted to the Security Council by the end of May.

Yesterday, Moller discussed the Cyprus problem with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matt Bryza and Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis, while he was expected to have a lunch with UN Undesecretay-General Ibrahim Gambari.

[02] EU - PUBLIC DIALOGUE LAUNCHED

Cyprus` contribution to the future of the European Union will be very substantial and will deal with issues on which Cypriots have views and expectations in relation to the shape of tomorrow`s Europe, Cypriot Foreign Minister has said.

Launching a public dialogue with citizens on the future of Europe, Iacovou said Cyprus` progress is linked to European development, noting that the island, after its accession on May 1 2004, is an integral part of the united Europe. The dialogue will focus on issues like economic and social development in Europe, EU foreign policy and its role on the international scene, food safety, consumer protection and the Euro.

Iacovou called on the Cypriots to participate and contribute to this effort for a creative and substantial dialogue for their own benefit and for the sake of Cyprus and the future of the European construction.

Cyprus European Institute Deputy Director Neofytos Xrisohos said that a new era is dawning that would allow a dialogue among citizens to take place on the constitution of Europe in every member state.

Head of the EU`s Representation in Cyprus Themis Themistocleous said a policy agenda for Europe is needed to create the conditions for the institutional reforms that Europe needs. ``We have to move from the period of reflection to a period of action,`` he added.

Head of the European Parliament Information Office Tasos Georgiou said that through this national dialogue, the EU will listen to the people`s concerns and would be able to proceed to the shaping of a new Europe.
