  • [01] CYPRUS GOVERNMENT RICE

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rices reference to "north Cyprus" is an inappropriate term, Government Spokesman George Lillikas said today, commenting on the statements made by Rice in Athens.

Her reference to north Cyprus is surely an inappropriate term. For the government of Cyprus there are Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus. The term used by the European Union in some of its documents regarding the acquis communautaire is areas not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus but which still belong to the Republic of Cyprus, Lillikas noted.

Referring to Rices statements on Turkeys EU course, he said that the US policy to facilitate Turkeys EU course is well known to us. Rices statements yesterday were made in the framework of this US policy.

Commenting on Rices statement that at the time that Cyprus, a still divided island, acceded to the EU, there was an understanding that Cyprus would certainly do nothing to block Turkeys accession, Lillikas said that todays government of Cyprus can not express any position on that, since by the time of Cyprus accession there was an other government on power.

Any promises or commitments given by this government have been honored, he added.

He reiterated that Cyprus favors Turkeys EU course, provided that the country abides by its EU commitments.

ŤOur policy and stance regarding Turkeys progress towards the EU is well known. We favor Turkeys EU accession, under some basic terms and preconditions, as set by the EU itself, he concluded.

    [02] SPOKESMAN TALAT

Government Spokesman George Lillikas stated that Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has not changed his policy regarding the preconditions for the resumption of talks for a Cyprus settlement.

Commenting on Talats statements made this week regarding the Cyprus issue, Lillikas said that "by setting three preconditions for the resumption of talks, Talat has proven that he is not ready to start a new dialogue on a nil basis".

    [03] CYPRIOT FM - EU-NATO MEETING

Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou leaves for Sophia to take part in the Informal Meeting of the EU-NATO Foreign Ministers.

It is expected that Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul will attend the meeting for the first time since Cyprus joined the EU. Turkey did not attend the two previous EU-NATO meetings because of Cyprus presence, citing other reasons
