  • [01] TO CNA SUBSCRIBERS

On the occasion of the Greek Orthodox Easter, the management and staff at CNA would like to send their best wishes for a happy Easter, good health and personal happiness to you and your families.

The Agency will be closed on Good Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Normal services will resume on Tuesday, 25 April.

    [02] HOLY SYNOD EASTER MESSAGE

Christs resurrection preambles and assures the resurrection of the our island, occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, the Holy Synod said.

In its Easter message, the Holy Synod notes that principles cannot be ignored since they were replaced with Christs resurrection.

The Holy Synod said it wants and it is pursuing for all the people on the island to enjoy, in conditions of peace, freedom, security and justice, their inalienable human rights, in a free, united Cyprus.

We hope that the resurrected Christ will bless our struggle so that soon everyone united will celebrate our homelands resurrection, the message reads.

NOTE: The message can be published in the newspapers on Good Saturday, 22 April 2006 while radio and television stations should broadcast it on Easter Sunday.

    [03] CYPRIOT FM TURKEY

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou has said Turkey cannot cite the principle term of the Ankara Protocol to call the European Commission to arbitration as regards the issues concerning the Additional Protocol for the ten new EU member states.

He underlined that Ankara`s obligations concerning the opening of its ports and airports to Cypriot ships and airplanes are still in place.

``We will wait for Turkey`s rendezvous with the Council of the EU Foreign Ministers, probably to the held in October, to hear Turkey`s intentions as regards the implementation of these obligations,`` he added.

Asked whether the Republic of Cyprus is examining the possibility of using legal means provided by the World Trade Organisation, Iacovou said ``we consider the issue as a political one and that there is an absolute engagement and obligation of Turkey.``

    [04] CYPRUS PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

The distinctiveness of the May 2006 Parliamentary elections is the participation of Turkish Cypriots and the fact that ballots will be counted for the first time at election centres, said Interior Minister Andreas Christou.

Speaking after a second meeting on the course of preparations for the forthcoming elections, Christou said a total of 1,250 election centres will operate, an additional 60 centres than the previous elections due to the increased population.

A total of 270 Turkish Cypriots have been registered to vote at an estimated 30 election centres. The first official results for political parties will be known around 2100 local time.

Christou said samples of the voting papers are already being printed adding that this time we might have the biggest voting paper ever in Parliamentary elections if more political combinations or isolated candidacies come forward.

The Interior Minister also said that almost all voting booklets are ready and their owners will be asked to collect them in the beginning of next week.

Christou said that those who have lost their voting booklets or have been destroyed can apply until 1300 on 20 May to have them replaced while those who need additional papers attached to their booklets can apply even on the day of the elections.
