    Commissioner Kyprianou visiting Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - Cypriot European Union Commissioner responsible for Health and Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou is visiting Cyprus from Friday 30 September until October 5.

    According to the programme of his visit, tomorrow Kyprianou will speak at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Advisory Forum Annual Meeting, which will take place in Larnaca.

    New Cypriot High Commissioner for South Korea

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - South Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun has said that his country supports Cyprus on the basis of UN principles and wished every success to efforts to reach a Cyprus settlement that would lead to the reunification of the island.

    According to an official press release, Cyprus' High Commissioner to Australia Achilleas Antoniades, presenting his credentials to South Korea's President, briefed Roh Moo-hyun on efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and developments after the island's accession to the European Union in May 2004.

    Greek Health Minister to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - Greek Minister of Health and Social Solidarity Nikitas Kaklamanis arrives in Cyprus tonight for an official visit.

    Tomorrow he will successively visit the Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation, meet with Cypriot Minister of Health Andreas Gavrielides and be received by President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Cyprus and Recognised Organisations sign maritime agreement

    Limassol, Sep 29 (CNA) - Cyprus and the Recognised Organisations signed an agreement today, especially important for Cypriot maritime, governing the delegation of statutory surveys, inspections and certification services for ships flying the Cyprus flag, according to Director of the Commercial Maritime Department Sergios Sergiou.

    The agreement was signed this morning in Limassol. The Republic of Cyprus was represented by Sergiou, who said that ''following the signing of the agreement, a new era begins in the relations of the Republic of Cyprus with the Recognised Organisations, although a long a fruitful cooperation exists for decades now with the esteemed Organisations.''

    The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) informs its subscribers and associates that as from Tuesday, 4 October 2005, will launch its new Website.

    The new Website will replace the existing one and it will be located in the same address: www.cna.org.cy

    The new Website will appear in three versions: Greek, Turkish, English and will offer Subscribers access to CNA's news and photo archives.

    Subscribers can use the username and password they already have.

    Interpol proposes Cyprus-Turkey meeting to solve differences

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) - Interpol's President Jackie Selebi has suggested a tripartite meeting between Cyprus, Turkey and Interpol to discuss the problems arising from Ankara's refusal to cooperate with Nicosia, a proposal that has already been accepted by the Cypriot Police.

    According to a Police bulletin released today, the Chief of Police, accompanied by the officer in charge of his office, participated between September 19 and 22 in the Interpol 74th General Assembly in Berlin, attended by delegates from 154 countries, as well as representatives of other organisations.

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday 30/09/05 to 01/10/2005

    Mainly fine weather is expected, with medium and high cloud increasing in amount at times, mainly on Saturday. Gentle to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly winds will be blowing during daytime, expected light to gentle later in the night. The state of sea will be generally slight, but locally up to moderate over the west and south, in the afternoons. Maximum temperature 31-31C inland, 30-31C over the south and east coasts, 27-29C over the west and north coasts and 22-24C over Troodos mountains. Minimum temperatures 17-19C inland and over the coasts and 12-14C over Troodos mountains.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday 02/10/200 to 03/10/2005

    Partly cloudy weather is expected on Sunday, with local showers possible in the afternoon and overnight.

    Mainly fine weather is expected on Monday, with a small rise in temperature.

    ''Europe Direct'' services operate in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) -- A new European information service has been established in Cyprus aiming at bringing the European Union closer to its citizens. The ''Europe Direct'' information network will inform Cypriots and other Europeans living on the island, free of charge, on issues that affect them and are related to the EU, such as institutional matters, policies, legislation and programmes.

    The information relays operate in the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos, which have been assigned with this new service through a tender procedure.

    With this new service, European citizens in Cyprus can either visit their local relays, phone and generally communicate with them and pose various questions on EU issues. They can even ask for assistance form expert personnel through the internet, via the Europe direct website.

    Brussels, Sep 29 (CNA) - The EU British Presidency has called for an extraordinary meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg Sunday, as Permanent Representatives of the ''25'' did not manage to adopt today the negotiating framework for Turkey.

    The EU Foreign Ministers will convene one day before the Turkey-EU talks are due to start, as Austria insisted that the text provides for a special partnership with Ankara in case there is no conclusion of the accession negotiations.

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) The European Parliament has sent clear political messages to Turkey, said today Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, adding that Turkey has to comply with the EU wishes and not the other way round.

    Speaking during his daily briefing, Chrysostomides stressed that the most important of these messages is the one saying that ''Turkey must embrace the values on which the EU is based in order to move towards the European Union''.

    Cyprus government government examines separately every application for citizenship

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) Every application to grant Cyprus citizenship is examined separately, Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said.

    He was commenting reports in the daily press that since last year the government has granted citizenship to hundreds of people living in the Turkish occupied north of the island whose one parent is a Turkish Cypriot and the other a settler.

    ''Every case is examined separately. The most important criterion is the origin of the person who applies for citizenship. If there is a Cypriot parent then each case is examined on its own merits'', he said.

    House Defence Committe supports conduct of ''Nikiforos''

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA) Cyprus Parliamentary Defence Committee has unanimously expressed support to the conduct of military annual exercise ''Nikiforos'' as this was taking place, before its cancellation for some years now, President of the Committee Yiannakis Omirou has said.

    He added that the existence of ''a reliable military force with preventive power requires training and exercises'', noting that the most important exercise of the National Guard is the joint exercise of Cyprus and Greece ''Nikiforos Toxotis''.

    Nicosia, Sep 29 (CNA)-- Cyprus President reiterated here today his commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federal solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Receiving the credentials of Serbia and Montenegro's new Ambassador to Cyprus Mirko Jelic, Papadopoulos expressed Cyprus' unequivocal support to the European perspective of Serbia and Montenegro.

    Presenting his credentials, Jelic said that there are many opportunities for enhancing the bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and Serbia Montenegro, particularly in the political and economic field.
