    Molyviatis and Burns discuss EU, Turkey and Cyprus

    New York, Sep 19 (CNA) -- Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Petros Molyviatis met here on Sunday with US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns, with whom he discussed EU-Turkish relations, the Cyprus problem, FYROM and the situation in Kosovo, among other issues.

    Speaking to Greek journalists after the meeting, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza said that the two delegations had a great discussion in ''keeping with the spirit of the elevation of the US-Greek relations to a strategic level.''

    On the meeting between Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried, Bryza said ''this is the end game of these discussions about October 3rd'' when Turkey is scheduled to begin EU accession negotiations, noting that ''we are not participants in the process.''

    Trade unions reconfirm their position on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 19 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, as well as Turkish and Greek trade unions, point out the need for United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to assume a new initiative on Cyprus on the basis of his solution plan, with the necessary changes that would make the plan acceptable by both communities without changing its philosophy.

    A Cyprus All Trade Union Forum permanent committee press release notes the trade unions met in the framework of the second conference of Turkish, Greek and Cypriot trade unions organised in Constantinople on September 16 and 17, and discussed the situation of employees in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus and the role of trade unions to achieve peace and stability in the region.

    The meeting took place in a positive and constructive climate, the release says, adding that it was decided that the next meeting would be held in Cyprus.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 19 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Tuesday (September 20) and Wednesday (September 21), the weather will be mainly fine with local clouds and a risk of local mist towards dawn. Winds will be gentle, mainly northwesterly to northeasterly, overnight, becoming gradually gentle to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly during the day. In the afternoons, winds are expected locally fresh. The state of sea will be generally slight to moderate. Maximum temperatures will reach 34 to 35 degrees Centigrade inland, 30 to 31 degrees along the east and south coasts, 28 to 29 degrees along the west and north coasts, and 24 to 25 degrees over Prodromos. Minimum temperatures will be around 19 to 20 degrees Centigrade inland and along the coast, and 14 to 15 degrees over Prodromos.

    On Thursday (September 22) and Friday (September 23) no significant change is expected in the weather conditions, although temperatures are expected to drop.

    Cyprus Government respects German vote

    Nicosia, Sep 19 (CNA) - The Cypriot Government respects the results of democratic elections in the EU member states and the states of the international community.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, commenting on the result of Sunday's voting in Germany, reassured that ''the Cypriot government will cooperate with sincerity, develop friendly relations with any government that will emerge from the elections and fully respects the verdict of the sovereign people of Germany.''

    Spokesman: Cypriot President clarified positions in UNGA address

    Nicosia, Sep 19 (CNA) Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has clearly conveyed in his address to the UN General Assembly all elements that involve a solution to the Cyprus problem, said here Monday Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

    Chrysostomides said the President expressed hope that the UN Secretary-General would proceed with some moves so that negotiations for a Cyprus solution will begin.

    Chrysostomides noted that the positions expressed by the Cypriot President in his speech are clear, lucid and reassured of our commitment for a solution to the Cyprus problem, reunification of our country based on the correct basis.

    Commenting on a statement by US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza that President Tassos Papadopoulos must satisfy the SG in specifying with clarity and finality his objections to the Annan Plan, the Spokesman said that the Cypriot President clarified that these positions have been put forward very clearly and no one can doubt it.
