Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the government totally agreed with the Vatican's reaction, noting that it was after moves by the government that the desecration of the monastery had come to the attention of the Vatican. In statements regarding comments made by the Turkish Cypriot member of the Committee for the Missing Persons (CMP) Rustem Tatar, Chrysostomides said the government was ready to make all necessary moves in order to accelerate the establishment of such a laboratory and promote the identification process. Commenting on remarks by so-called prime minister in the Turkish occupied areas Ferdi Sabit Soyer that the school should operate under the same criteria as the Greek school in the occupied Karpass peninsula, Chrysostomides said the school operates on the basis of the respect for the right to education, maintaining the cultural traditions and within the framework of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. ''I am reasonably confident that we can get a deal, we are very close to reaching an agreement on the counter-declaration. Our job now is to bridge the gaps between the many different views on the counter-declaration, ensure that the EU sticks to its commitments and that we reach our objective of starting the negotiations with Turkey on October 3,'' he said.
