    Vatican reacts to Armenian monastery desecration

    Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) - A decision by the Turkish occupation regime to grant a ''license'' to operate a recreation centre in the Armenian Monastery of Surb Makar (Saint Makarios) in the Halefka area, north of the Turkish occupied village of Kythrea, has spurred a strong reaction by the Vatican.

    Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the government totally agreed with the Vatican's reaction, noting that it was after moves by the government that the desecration of the monastery had come to the attention of the Vatican.

    Greek Cypriot side urgently wants anthropological centre

    Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the Greek Cypriot side urgently wanted the establishment and operation of an anthropological centre to classify the remains of missing persons and promote the process of identifying them.

    In statements regarding comments made by the Turkish Cypriot member of the Committee for the Missing Persons (CMP) Rustem Tatar, Chrysostomides said the government was ready to make all necessary moves in order to accelerate the establishment of such a laboratory and promote the identification process.

    Spokesman says no one can object to Limassol Turkish school

    Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that no one could object to a school in Limassol for Turkish-speaking students and that it was not possible to impose terms regarding the operation of that school.

    Commenting on remarks by so-called prime minister in the Turkish occupied areas Ferdi Sabit Soyer that the school should operate under the same criteria as the Greek school in the occupied Karpass peninsula, Chrysostomides said the school operates on the basis of the respect for the right to education, maintaining the cultural traditions and within the framework of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights.

    Britain must stick to EU principles, says Cyprus Spokesman

    Nicosia, Sept 6 (CNA) The Cyprus government will not accept any maneuverings that aim to promote British policies that have no relation with the wider European policy, said here Tuesday Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

    He was referring to tomorrows COREPER meeting in Brussels, which will discuss the EU counter-statement to Turkeys declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

    Chrysostomides reiterated that the government is pursuing an improvement of the last draft of the EU counterstatement, adding that it is clear that the new document will reflect the positions of member states, their general discontent over Turkeys declaration as well as a series of other measures which are necessary to be included in the counterstatement.

    Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) -- The US Embassy in Nicosia will open tomorrow a condolences book for the victims of the tragic devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, an US Embassy press release issued today states.

    Britain hopeful about consensus on counter-declaration

    Nicosia, Sep 6 (CNA) -- British High Commissioner here Peter Millett appeared hopeful that an EU ambassadors meeting tomorrow in Brussels will reach consensus on a counter-declaration in response to a unilateral declaration Turkey, made last month that it does not recognize one of its members, the Republic of Cyprus.

    ''I am reasonably confident that we can get a deal, we are very close to reaching an agreement on the counter-declaration. Our job now is to bridge the gaps between the many different views on the counter-declaration, ensure that the EU sticks to its commitments and that we reach our objective of starting the negotiations with Turkey on October 3,'' he said.
