    Armenian representative to House dies

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- Bedros Kalaydjian, the representative of Armenians in Cyprus to the House of Representatives, has died at the age of 71.

    He has been ill for some time and died on Thursday, it was officially announced.The funeral takes place on Saturday at the Armenian church in Larnaca.

    Church service in occupied Morphou underway

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- Many Greek Cypriots, most of them from the Turkish occupied town of Morphou, gathered this morning in the church of Ayios Mamas, the patron saint, to participate in a service, the second such service since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

    The service is officiated by Morphou Bishop Neofytos, who on Thursday also officiated the evening service, according to church tradition that calls for a service on the eve of a religious feast.

    Addressing the congregation, the Bishop called for initiatives to solve the question of Cyprus, saying ''time is working against us. ''He said a lot of people on both sides have a vision for a united Cyprus, where both communities live in peace.

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- George Penintaex, Chief Editor of the Cyprus News Agency, has been appointed to the post of Acting Director of the Agency, following a decision by the CNA Board of Directors.

    Penintaex assumed his duties as Acting Director today, until the Board appoints a new Director.

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- The King of Sweden Charles XVI has expressed hope that after Cyprus' accession to the European Union the island's political question would be solved so that the country can exploit to the full its potential.

    He also noted with particular interest the level of development in Cyprus and the progress achieved since independence in 1960.

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- The President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos sent today a message of condolences to the President of the United States George W. Bush for the devastation caused by the hurricane Katrina.

    ''It is with deep sorrow that I have received the news about the deaths, injuries and destruction caused by the Hurricane 'Katrina' at the United States Gulf coast,'' Papadopoulos said.

    ''On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and myself personally, I wish to convey to you our most sincere condolences. Please convey to the families of the victims my deepest sympathy as well as to the families of the injured my best wishes for their speedy recovery'', he added.

    ''The people and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and myself stand in full solidarity with the friendly people of the United States of America at this difficult time''.

    Cyprus totally satisfied with EU Ministers' Informal Meeting

    Newport, Sep 2 (CNA) - The Cypriot government is totally satisfied with the works of the Informal Council of the EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs, which wrapped up its two-day meeting this afternoon in Newport, Wales.

    Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said agreement had been reached on a text on an EU statement to counter the Turkish declaration accompanying the signing of the additional protocol to its customs union, which said Ankara did not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

    He added that this text was a great improvement on a draft presented by the British presidency two days ago, noting that Cypriot positions were met with great support. Iacovou said the text would now be sent to COREPER for further processing and was expected to come out even better.

    Newport, Sep 2 (CNA) - British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, whose country currently holds the EU rotating presidency, said today that alongside Turkey's process to begin accession negotiations with the EU, there was the UN-sponsored process to reach a settlement of the problem of Cyprus and a series of UN resolutions on the matter.

    Speaking at a press briefing on the conclusion of the two-day Informal Council of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs, which took place in Newport, Wales, Straw said the EU had to ensure that the process for Turkey's accession was on the same basis of any other member state, taking into consideration the UN-sponsored process on Cyprus.

    Cypriot MPs to take part in CPA Conference in Fiji Islands

    Nicosia, Sept 2 (CNA) - A delegation of the House of Representatives will participate in the 51st World Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) to be held between 1-10 September in Fiji Islands.

    The Cypriot parliamentary delegation is made up of members of the House Christos Mavrokordatos, Eleni Theocharous and Sofoklis Fittis. House Director General Costakis Christoforou will also take part.

    Key official interest rates remain unchanged

    Nicosia, Sept 2 (CNA) -- The Monetary Policy Committee decided today to maintain unchanged the key official interest rates of the Central Bank of Cyprus.

    Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou announced after the Committee's meeting that the interest rates on the marginal lending facility (Lombard) and the overnight deposit facility, remain unchanged at 4.25% and 2.25% respectively.
